Feb. 3 Daily Show with John Stewart talked about the proposal from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy in the military. John Oliver came on and gave a little satirical twist to the issue. Is the issue of Don't Ask Don't Tell really the right way to go from a Psychological perspective or would it be better to repeal it? Would revealing sexual preference ruin unit cohesion, or do you think it would create mistrust between soldiers?
I posted the whole episode, but it is the on the first segment. The second segment of the show actually is good as well. Sam Bee deals with gender equality.

The analogy they made between the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and old people in the senate was hysterical! I'm not all that familiar with the entire story behind the DA-DT policy but it sounds like a cheap way of saying, "we don't want homosexuals in the military, but if there are we don't want to know about it". This seems like a lazy way of trying to resolve a serious issue. I tried to find some information as to what kinds of diversity education programs they have in the military, but didn't find anything that indicated it existed. So I question what other methods our military is using to try and educate its members about tolerance of others. If they say the issue is "unit cohesion" and having openly gay individuals in the military is breaking down this cohesiveness, then there needs to be more of an emphasis on tolerance. The focus should be on those who displaying prejudice or discriminating against others, not those who are in the minority. In a country that is attempting (sort of) to promote the tolerance of individual differences, it would seem that there would be alternative solutions to an issue like this. Does anyone know what kinds of measures the military takes to promote tolerance to diversity?
