Read Chapter 3 of C&K on lie detection.

What did you learn from this chapter that you did not know before? Discuss at least two basic psychological processes that are involved in detecting deceit in others. Is lie detection different if it is a legal context (questionning a suspect), vs in a social situation (talking to a friend)? Why or why not? Defend your answer.

After reading it, discuss some aspect of it that struck you as particularly interesting, insightful, or surprising.

Next, what elements of psychology do you see as underpinnings of the various guidelines? Choose two and specifically detail how the science of psychology is the basis of the particular rule.

Read Chapter 1 in Minds on Trial about George Metesky.

Summarize the chapter. What profiling techniques were used in his apprehension? How integral were they to his ultimate capture? Do you think the techniques were scientifically valid? Does it matter, if in the end you catch the person? What are your thoughts on that issue?

Elizabeth Loftus is arguably one of the most important scientists in the area of memory evidece and false memories.

Learn as much as you can about her, her research, and how it applies to the law. Googling loftus memory will give you a good start. Your textbook also has a lot of information about her.

What did you learn? What were you must surprised about? Which of her research findings did you find most fascinating? Why do you think her research has been controversial? Does it deserve to be? How has her work helped us understand memory in general, and memory evidence in particular?

Crime Scenes

The site is not very organized, but if you scroll down you will see that there are crime scene photos of various famous crimes. Browse around as much as you want. Be aware these are graphic. If you are blood phobic, skip this part and don't click on the links, just read the crime titles.

Choose a crime from the website (e.g., OJ Simpson). Now find out as much as you can about that crime. It is acceptable for this assignment to use Wikipedia and Google to get information. What was your chosen crime scene like? What elements of crime scene investigation were required for this case you chose? What psychological factors are relevant to the crime scene and the investigation of it? What aspects of your readings are relevant to crime scenes in general, and your crime scene in particular?
