Try Your Hand At Investigating a Crime Scene

In class this week, we talked a lot about the specifics about crime scenes and how they are investigated. I found this interactive game that shows you the crime scene, forensic evidence, information about people involved with the case and challenges you to solve the case. It's a great experience especially after learning the actual details about how crime scenes are really handled in real life. TruTV seems to be very accurate in the way they set up this game. It's not graphic or anything and was quite fun.

After playing the game, I definitely realized being a detective is not for me, but it certainly was very interesting trying to put the pieces together and understanding what some people do everyday for their job.

After talking about the Micheal Peterson crime scene in class, I was very interested to apply what we talked about to this activity. After reading the situation, and subjects profile's, I clicked the start button and a timer began. A cartoonesque crime scene came on the the screen with evidence labeled A-F. The evidence included blood, metal shavings, an unlocked door and muddy footprints among other things. After putting your cursor over the evidence, a description would pop up and tell you something about it. Ex: For the footprints, it said the floor had been mopped the night before, and the footprints were size 10 company issued boot, which coincidentally all the men wore.

After making judgments about the evidence and considering their background, my conclusion was drawn. After I pressed solve, it asked my what each piece of evidence had told me. Ex: Drops of blood were not relevant to the current scene because the work would not be back for awhile. I guessed that Miram or Brian did it, and ended up being correct. I scored 46 points.

It was a good experience for a simple website, but it was simple enough I probably would have scored the same way as before I started the class. I would have like to know what answers got me how many points and explanations why. Additionally while it gave background information, it did not touch on any psychological effects, or past criminal history, and no questions asked about the evidence included anything about their profiles.

I made the mistake of drawing my conclusion before I even saw any of the clues, ha ha. I figured that Eddie and Brian were working together. They had been friends for decades. Brian was in debt due to gambling and knew about the money in the safe. I figured that since Eddie had scouted out the area and was pretty experienced, he could think of a good place to stash the safe until later. The footprints were male, and they had access to the tools. The blood drops didn't match up, but I figured that they could have been left at another point. Since I suspected Brian, I assumed that he would be lying about having cleaned up the night before. And I don't quite remember, but I believe that he also had a key to the room. I didn't suspect Miriam and Joey because Miriam's father already provided for her and if she needed money, she could ask him for it. Plus, why would she steal from her father's company. Dumb move on her part.

I thought this activity was really interesting. Although I didn't spend as much time taking notes and remembering everything like I should have, I definitely got a good idea of how much time it truly takes to solve a case. I was pretty excited to find that I guessed right! The reason that I knew it was them was because Miriam liked to go against her father so that's why she's dating Joey and I feel like they wanted to steal the money and run away together so Miriam didn't have to listen to her father anymore and Joey could have Miriam and a lot of money.

I think the main point of this exercise was that being a detective takes a lot of hard work and time. You have to understand every aspect of the crime scene and know how to interpret it correctly. I don't think this is the type of job I would like to have.

I thought the activity was pretty interesting! I think it is "fun" trying to figure out who is resposible for a particular crime. I am especially interested in homicide investigations. I think that it would be a rigorous but rewarding job. It would be very satisfactory to be able to tell a loved one that after collecting all of the clues you have arrested the person who has taken a special person from them and to be able to tell them that they are going to be punished for their actions. I thought this activity simple in the way it was set up but i think it did a good job in describing the work that a detective must do in order to solve a crime. I thought joey was involved because a lot of the evidence pointed to him. I think this activity was interesting and would like to find more similiar activities.

I LOVED this game! it was great- almost to simple though. I did awesome on it in only 6 minutes! I know it isn't a reflection of how real investigation is but it was very insightful. I understand it doesn't accurately portray whether or not one would make a good detective but as i'm considering that line of work I hope so because i did pretty well. I'm going to look for more activities like this one. It was very very fun!

I like the rundown of characters/ suspects, etc. Also the detailing of scene and stuff was very well put together- but maybe a little to simple. It was beneficial to take notes though- fyi to anyone who plans on partaking in the activity.

This was a fun little game. It was realistic in the sense that the evidence was "tagged" by a letter as well as getting background information about the suspects.

I was unrealistic, though, in the sense that it takes a lot longer than 6 minutes to solve a case. Though it is a game and background information is obviously necessary to determine to perpetrator, in real life, nobody just "gives" you this information, it is up to you to find it yourself.

It was also too convenient that they told you what each clue meant. It would have been better if they would have left it up to you to find and just provided more information about the people. For example, when you clicked on the shavings from the drill bit which is found in a shed that only certain people had a key to, instead of telling you who had this key, they could have provided information at the beginning as to who had keys to what leaving it up to you to figure out what these shavings meant.

I also found it a little weird that Amanda's blood was on the scene but was not involved in the robbery. Maybe this would have been a little less suspicious had it not told you that the floor was evidently mopped the day before the robbery. Hmmmmm?

Overall it was fun, not totally realistic though!

I thought this game was interesting. It really did make you think and have to run down your list of facts. I like how they gave you all the information about the company, people, evidence list, and what was found out about the evidence. It was interesting to play the role of detective. I know that this is no where close to what a real detective would do, especially being as they left out all the interviewing, etc. I think it would have been more interesting to make us actually find the evidence, and then they could give us a run down of the info after we found it. I think that would have helped in the realistic factor. Overall, I thought that this was an interesting way to shed a little bit of insight into how crime scene investigation really works.
