Weekly topic report due 2/24/11:

Since announcing my expert topic of "serial rapists" I have learned that very few rapists aren't "serial rapists"!! Most continue to rape until they are caught. At one website (http://www/psychoservices.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/50/3/349) they state that the average rapist will have an average of 7 victims before he is caught. Based on this information, I'm going to be narrowing my topic to sadistic rapists, which are the most dangerous type. They are also some of the most famous (Ted Bundy for example). Another thing I have learned is that the vast majority of rapists have experienced abuse in their childhood. Much of these abuse seems to be centered on the mother. The father is generally portrayed as being aloof and distant. Also, with sadistic rapists, it is not unusual to find that they escalate not only the rapes (and the brutalization of the rapes) but may progress to killing their victims as well. One last thing I've learned: it's not unusual for them to have had a history of deviant sexual behavior (some of it illegal) before starting to rape. For now, the bulk of my information has come from the textbook I'm reading from my Sex Offenses class, entitled Sex Crimes: Patterns and Behaviors.

Expert Topic

I've spent the better part of last week working on my expert topic. After reading a lot of journal articles, book chapters, and writing a lot of information down, I have the powerpoint mostly finished. I have about 13 slides, dealing with such things as characteristics (of both the people and the crime), theories about their behavior, progression of the crime, and I need to add another slide about etiology, of which we don't really know a whole lot. The last 4 slides are about different famous people who were sadistic rapists. Actually, they ended up becoming serial killers, but that is pretty common with sadistic rapists. Since powerpoints aren't very good for putting detailed information in them, I've tried to keep the main points on the powerpoint itself, but am writing a lecture underneath each slide in the notes section. I'll be working on it all day today and probably most of the day tomorrow. Hopefully, it will done by then.

Expert Topic

Last Monday I did work most of the day on my powerpoint, but didn't finish it up. After spending a few more hours on it today, I have it done!!!! It came out to 14 slides, not including the reference slides, which added 4 more. For my 5 minute presentation, I'll briefly go through the slides. The notes section has much more detail, but I won't be reading it b/c it will take too long. That lecture/note section is really just a way to show how much work I put into the powerpoint; just looking through the slides isn't enough. I'm looking forward to presenting this.
