Wow, these guys were great. Im surprised Simon gave a standing ovation. The moves these guys created was a domino effect. It would start small and end up with the whole group dancing. It would look really weird if it was only 1 or 2 people, because the purpose of the performance was to have that illusion of seeing a wave of dancers, not to single out other dancers. Even though they weren't all in sync at some points, it didn't effect the overall reaction of the performance.
There are two openly apparent concepts of the Gestalt theory for me.
Similarity:
The concept of similarity involves the group members dressing alike and moving in similar manners to promote, as Cassy put it "a wave of dancers."
Proximity:
The dancers are always pretty close together which helps with a feeling of unification between the dancers which in turn helps them seem similar.
This video reminded me of the concept of flash mobs. Mass numbers of people getting together and reacting to music based on group, creating a pulsing type of dance. See below link.
I thought this group's performance was amazing and one of the best I've seen from this show and America's Best Dance Crew. One of the basic principles of Gestalt psychology states that the whole is different than the sum of its parts because our interpretation of what we perceive depends on the whole. This is explained by watching how this team delivered an amazing performance as a group, rather than each individual performing separately. There are several laws that specify how we organize the individual dancers into a team or the whole. First, this dance team is perceptually organized by the law of similarity which states that similar things appear to be grouped together. This could apply to the uniforms and orientation of their movements. Also the dancers are near to each other so they appear to be grouped together in accordance to the law of proximity or nearness. Finally, the law of common fate also explains how we perceive these individuals to be grouped. It states that things that are moving in the same direction appear to be grouped together which can be appreciated in their choreography and flawless synchronization.

After a gentle push in the right direction, Dr. Maclin pointed me in the direction of one concept to the Gestalt theory that I had forgotten.
The concept of "common fate" states that units or entities moving in the same direction tend to be perceived as a collective unit or group.
Examples of this can include anything from the dancers in this video to something as common as traffic on the interstate.
