By now you know that the social needs are: achievement, intimacy, power, and affiliation.
I want you to search youtube (or other video website) and find one example for each of those four social needs. You likely will NOT be able to search on those terms to find the videos. People posting videos will not know or realize that what they are posting might be demonstrating one of these social needs. So you will need to just browse around.
Describe the clip, discuss how it is an example of the particular social need, and then provide the link.
Do this for each of the four social needs.
The first video I chose is about an eight year old kid who is a black belt in karate. The video is a story about the boy and his stunning achievements. This video demonstrates achievement, and more specifically, mastery. The boy has won numerous awards in karate and even teaches karate classes (at the age of 8!). He started learning karate at about the same time his dad did, and progressed a lot further in a shorter amount of time. He has mastered many karate tasks, which allows him to be successful. He is good at what he does, and has achieved a lot for his young age.

The second video I chose is of the slam poet Taylor Mali speaking. He talks about teaching and how others tend to look down on it. Throughout the video, he gives examples of what teachers do. This video demonstrates power because Taylor Mali is very interested in impacting others. He wants to positively influence his audience and hopes that many of them will choose a career in teaching, in order to make the world a better place. He believes that teaching is the most important thing in the world.

I do not watch Scrubs regularly, but I have seen a couple of episodes. This clip shows Turk and JD reuniting after Turk returns from his honeymoon. They are best friends, and that is clearly demonstrated in the clip. They are very excited to see each other, and Turk’s wife makes a comment after he runs off to meet JD. She says to the cab driver that maybe someday Turk will love her like he loves JD. This demonstrates intimacy because they are clearly in a warm and fulfilling relationship. They were equally excited to see each other, and their relationship is reciprocal. Also, if Turk’s new wife is wishing he loved her like he does JD, they clearly have a strong relationship. After running through the hospital, they eventually find each other. Their embrace at the end of the video was a little much for me, but I guess it worked for them.

Affiliation is the opportunity to please others and gain their approval. This clip is my favorite out of the ones I have chosen for this assignment. It is from the movie Meet the Robinsons. In it, Goob helps out his roommate Louis with an invention. He helps Louis because he wants to gain his approval. Louis is always working on his inventions, and as a result, Goob does not get much sleep. Goob had a big baseball game the next day, and he was really tired. He missed the ball because he had fallen asleep. Goob was really upset about missing the ball because his need for affiliation (or competence for that matter) was not met. He wanted to please his teammates in order to fit in and feel like he belonged there. At the end of the clip, they show him missing the ball. His teammates gather around him and beat him up because in their eyes, he caused them to lose the game. Goob’s need for affiliation was not met at the baseball game.

Locating YouTube videos that aptly displayed the four social needs of achievement, affiliation, intimacy, and power was rather difficult with out knowing what to look for. It also didn’t help that I’m not an avid YouTube surfer. I am much more of a movie person and I only go to YouTube for movie trailers. You’ll notice that throughout this assignment.
The first social need that I found a video for was power. There is a new television show out this year called Once Upon A Time. It is my new addiction. All of the social needs are displayed in the show. However, finding a video from the show that could display a need was rather difficult. I was able to find a trailer for the show that shows enough of one character to display the need for power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rga4rp4j5TY The Evil Queen has a very high need for power. This is first evident because of what she is wearing. She is wearing an elaborate dress, has a lot of makeup on, is wearing a large pendant and has her hair done well. These are all examples of prestige possessions. Also, towards the end of the video you can kind of see a little bit of her home when she looks in the mirror and this is elaborate enough to also be a prestige possession. Her name has queen in it, which is certainly an influential occupation and exhibits leadership. Also, as Queen she would receive recognition for being Queen and for being evil. We see her threaten Snow White and threaten people throughout the video, which is evidence of aggressiveness.
The next need I will discuss is achievement. It isn’t a very long clip that applies to the topic but I am using the trailer for Hunger Games. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FovFG3N_RSU If you go to about 1:53, there is a segment of Katniss and Gale talking. He tells her that she can do it but she says that 24 go in but only one comes out. This means that she must have a high need of achievement so that she can be the one that comes out. This achievement may not be her norm but in this case it is more out of survival. Unfortunately, being such a short clip, we can only discern a small amount of information. The standard of excellence in this case is survival and she feels the need to reach that standard.
The third need I will discuss is affiliation. Affiliation is more so our fear of rejection in a relationship. Fear of rejection is evident in people when they do not have a significant other. It is also evident if they avoid contact with people of the opposite sex and don’t form close friendships with others. I chose to use the movie trailer for The Lucky One. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htg8CHNkFtQ&feature=related In this trailer it is evident that the main female, Beth, has a fear of rejection. She doesn’t want to hire the new guy in the first place. Then, she denies wanting to have anything to do with him yet we see her gazing intently at him while he works as she is washing a pot.
The last need that I will be discussing is intimacy. People with a high need for intimacy desire long-term relationships and work to maintain them. I chose the trailer for Friends With Benefits to display this need. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJS-wWqVAyk In this case, the two main characters are each displaying a low need for intimacy (at least from what info we can gather from the trailer). The specifically say, “No relationship. Just sex.” If they had a high need for intimacy, they would want a relationship first. However, that statement shows that they each do not have a high need for intimacy but actually are displaying fairly low levels of it.
Terms Used: Social Needs, Achievement, Affiliation, Intimacy, Power, Prestige Possession, Influential Occupation, Aggressiveness, Leadership, Recognition, Standard of Excellence, Relationships
The first clip I found demonstrates achievement. The clip is from a comedy video blog called “Cute Win Fail”. As the title implies, the videos that Toby Turner shows are clips were people “win” by doing something that society deems as valuable (aka, funny or cool) or “fail” when their attempt at doing something impressive or funny results in some type of embarrassment. The video clips go up against each other and the most “epic” video of the three wins. So not only are the videos themselves seeking to achieve the title as the most “epic”, which is determined by the viewer’s votes on which is the most entertaining, but the videos themselves are of people or animals achieving or failing (or being cute) at some task. In this particular clip, we see a man embarrass himself by hitting himself in the groin while doing a basketball stunt, a girl who casts her disobedient dog in a play, and a cute dancing parrot. You can find the clip at this link: http://youtu.be/CdfBiuHE6Zo.
The second social need is intimacy, or the need to form close relationships with others. I am a huge fan of the cute animal videos, so I found a video clip of a unique relationship between a puppy and a cat. In the video, we can see how attached this puppy is to an adult cat. They are seen cleaning each other, cuddling, and playing. To set the mood, the video is accompanied by a classic love ballade. This video demonstrates intimacy because it shows a reciprocal, loving relationship between two beings. You can find the video clip at this link: http://youtu.be/ytedC1heY_8.
The third social need is affiliation, or the need positive relationships with others. This need is different from intimacy because it is deficiency-oriented, which can result in it being perceived as negative or “needy”. One way people can fulfill their affiliation need is by joining groups or by being surrounded by like-minded people. For this reason, I found a video clip of a flash mob. This particular flash mob is the student union on Oklahoma State’s campus. The video can be found at this link: http://youtu.be/HDNOB6TnHSI.
The final social need is power ,which is described as the desire to make the physical and social world conform to one’s personal image or plan for it. What better model for the need for power is there but a super villain? That is why I choose the movie trailer for “Despicable Me”. Gru, who is the evil villain, is obsessed with capturing the moon. To help him with his evil plot, he orders around his little minions. This shows his need to control his environment. The clip can be found at this link: http://youtu.be/0mqUMQfKmg0
There are four social needs: affiliation, intimacy, power, and achievement. Each of these needs can be demonstrated in the following videos from Youtube.
The first video’s link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6kwUBrRjaM. This clip demonstrates a need for affiliation, in which a man is posting a video for a dating service. You can tell he is trying to satisfy a deprivation by his initial nervous rambling, but it becomes very apparent that he is isolated from women when he gets frustrated and screams about his love life (or lack of). Therefore, his outburst was likely due to a perceived failure to satisfy an affiliation need, and evoked the opposite of relief (anxiety).
The second video’s link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQTvlfAbnkg. This video demonstrates a need for intimacy, in which a clingy young man asks a dating advisor what he should do about his rocky relationship. Basically, it was his first serious relationship, and he got too serious too fast (they’re on a break, because he wouldn’t give her space and dropped the “L” word prematurely). He was trying to satisfy an intimacy need by evoking an emotional exchange with someone he cared about. However, this need was unsatisfied, because he pushed it too hard on the other person (who did not have as much of a need for intimacy), and evoked the opposite of joy (sadness).
The third video’s link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isfn4OxCPQs&feature=related. This demonstrates a power need in a bully and a victim, in which the victim stands up to the bully, and the bully retaliates by hurting the victim. At first, the victim tries to satisfy a power deficit establishing power (impact). He approaches the bully, verbally insults him, and hits him. The bully’s power has been challenged, and he picks up the victim and slams him on his head to maintain his current power (control). This was an interesting video, because it demonstrates the struggle power presents when two people try to satisfy it. However, the other social needs can be (and most often are required to be) met by both people.
The final video’s link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tlhRzSzHxU. This demonstrates an achievement need, in which a wrestler’s competence is challenged at the biggest event of the season: the state tournament. However, this wrestler demonstrates achievement to a much higher level than the other qualifiers. Megan Black challenged her competence to out wrestle the best in Iowa like every other wrestler at the tournament (perusing performance goals), but her pending performance had much more at stake. She was one of the two first female state qualifiers in Iowa’s history last year, but was beat out right away. However, she had goals of standing of the podium this year, which would not only challenge her competence, but the competence of female wrestlers in general. This video shows Megan’s achievement need met with her winning her first round match. What isn’t told in the video is the outcome of the tournament and Megan’s achievement need. On the final day, she stood on the podium (8th place), becoming the first female place winner in Iowa’s history of wrestling (and satisfying her achievement need by overcoming the challenges to her competence).
The first video that I looked at was a video of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. In the video Joey Chestnut beat his rival from Japan and set a new record for most hot dogs eaten. This is a good example of achievement because Joey has worked hard for years to be his rival and here he finally accomplishes it and sets a record while doing it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V-2NKUlzns
The second video that I looked at was the Tiger Woods confession video. I used think this can be an example of affiliation because he had good relationships, and then he screwed them up and now he is trying to build them back up by trying to say he is sorry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs8nseNP4s0
The next video is a clip from the show The Mentalist and Wayne Rigsby and Grace Van Pelt are dating but then they are told they can’t date because they are on the same unit, but they are still sneaking around behind everyone else’s backs. These is an example of intimacy because they are in love with each other and aren’t letting people get in their way to show each other how they feel.

For a video on power, I decided to use a speech by Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins is the quarterback for Michigan State University and he was asked to speech at a luncheon on the behalf of all Big Ten Athletes.

My first video is about Achievement. The series of videos are actually called achievement hunter. In this video these two guys create a course in the game Halo and they play a game of Horse each trying to beat these near impossible tasks the other has created. In the video we hear the commentary about how they created this game and how much they enjoyed the competition. These guys talk about beating the game Halo several times before so what I believe is an example of Perception of High Ability they make a harder course and HORSE game to show this. At the end of the video we do see the Geoff wins the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGouR9wY2Jo
My second video has to do with Affiliation. In this clip from a popular British comedy called Keeping Up Appearances the older woman is always trying to be perfects and make her friends and neighbors believe that. Unfortunately for her she has in laws that are the exact opposite of her. In this clip she is having a meeting with some very some very important people from a society and one of her in-laws shows up and their car breaks down. The woman, Hyacinth watched in horror as the one of the women from the club who is their counselor tries to help push the car while her in law rose, dressed scantly, also pushes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjImQneWEeM&feature=related
My next clip is about intimacy. In this clip we see the cast of the show Friends. This show is about all these friends that show an need for intimacy for each other and for partners. In the clip all of the members of the social group are singing the theme from the show "The Odd Couple". Ross starts out singing it and then they all join in. This shows that they are all close friends and they need for intimacy is high in order for them to all stay together through think and thin and to sing a song in the middle of the cafe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wGt-KXyXNM
Finally for my last clip I am showing the concept of power. This clip is from the show Doctor Who. In the clip the Doctor and the Master are talking and the Master is the Prime Minister of Great Britain. He is an evil person and he shows the need for power over Martha the woman by kidnapping her family and power over the Doctor by telling him he's being watched telling him to run. the Master also has power over the whole country as prime minister. the Master desires the need to control everything including Britain and the Doctor.

This clip is a pieced together strip of two events in the movie “Talladega Nights”. It shows Ricky Bobby getting his chance to fulfill his child hood dream of becoming a NASCAR driver and making an impact. From there we see him winning a race a few years or months later showing that he has maintained and expanded his power. When he quotes “If you ain’t first, you’re last” this shows his need for dominance, reputation, and status as a NASCAR driver. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_isgXzxIa24
Just like the clip above this is yet another clip from “Talladega Nights”. In this clip we have Bobby talking to his arch rival, Jean Girard. They are shown walking in Girard’s backyard and Girard explains to Bobby why he came to America. That reason was to be beaten by a driver that is truly better then himself and only then can his partner and him proceed to fulfill their wishes of becoming trainers. This shows a perfect example of achievement, Girard was energized enough to come all the way to America to put his pride on the line and challenge one of the world’s best drivers just to see if he himself (Girard) could be beaten. Demonstrating his high cognitive influences both in persistence and performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls96s8ej4wI
In this clip we have a young gentleman who just lost his love who is moving away for a better job offer, leaving him heartbroken and alone. So he calls up a girl he knows that we find out has feelings for him but is unsure if he is over his most recent break up. Within this clip we can see both affiliation and intimacy. The guy who’s girl just left him, is feeling the negative aspects of fear and loneliness. So he calls up this girl to try and re-establish, maintain, and restore some kind of relationship though the acceptance of this new girl, to secure his interpersonal relations. At the same time this new girl is fulfill her intimacy needs by engaging in a warm, close, and positive relation with the guy. She is feeling the fear of interpersonal rejection, she is unsure if he is over his last love enough to maintain a relationship with her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crPHQlD7CsY
The first clip that I chose was for achievement. It is a presentation of the Superbowl Trophy to the Green Bay Packers in 2011. The reason that it portrays achievement is because it is about a team that came together and won the ultimate prize in sports. They held themselves to a standard of excellence and they achieved what every athlete wants to achieve. They portrayed success in maybe the ultimate team sport and obviously it is a very big challenge because everyone is going after the championship too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu1Ny-HHn70
The second clip that I chose was for intimacy. The clip is from the old TV show Freaks and Geeks. In the scene Nick is sort of pronouncing his affection for Lindsay. He is singing an old Styx song to her called 'Lady'. The reason that it stands for intimacy is because he talks about how all he wants is to be loved by her. He is just looking for a close relationship with someone. Nick thinks that Lindsay can fill this need.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzrMrglib6c
The next clip that I found was about affiliation. The video clip I chose was from the movie The Cable Guy. It showed "Chip" trying to seek the approval of being good at basketball to Steven. He was looking for affection from a guy who he wanted to be friends with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQvt1JFFHxg
The last one I found was about power. I chose the trailer for the movie The Social Network. Why I chose this is because the whole movie is about Mark Zuckerberg creating Facebook. The reason this shows power is that he wants to create something that is influential and he always talks about making something that gets him into the "clubs". He wants to be recognized and wanted to make something that had his imprint.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB95KLmpLR4
Achievement:
I believe this first video definitely an example of achievement, and it definitely relates to my life as well, which is why I know it is an example of achievement. This video shows two women finishing up a marathon, but at the end of the race their legs start to cramp up and give it. Both of them fell to the ground. Yet, both of the women did this best to make it to the end and finish the race (even if they did crawl). This is definitely achievement. I am a runner and if I fell to the ground during a race I would be horrified and probably not finish the race. These women wanted to achieve greatness and get through the finish line, which is exactly what they did. I think this is an example of ‘success in competition with a standard of excellence’ (which was from the book). This could also relate to Atkinson’s Model in that the probably of success depends on each person. For instance, maybe one of the women had been training for this race for months, while the other just started working out a couple weeks before. It just depends on the person.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1UvxxYIv3U
Power:
This next clip that I found has to do with the topic of power. The reason I found this clip was because it relates to the book that I am reading for our book report. This is the trailer for the movie ‘Sleeping with the Enemy.’ This clip shows scenes for a movie where the main character (Julia Roberts) is trying to escape from her obsessive, abusive husband, and how she runs away. It also shows how he is trying to find out and get her back. You can see in the clip that this is definitely an example of power, but maybe not the same type of power we have been discussing or that I have been writing about in my blogs. Roberts’s husband is an obsessive and abusive husband who needs to have power over her at all times. Even after Roberts runs away, changes her name and starts a new life she is still being controlled and dominated, even thought he is not there. She lives every day in fear and paranoia. According to the text, high power individuals strive to take force and control over others, and this is exactly what Roberts husband is trying to do, if he is with her or not. The book also relates power to aggressiveness, which is another thing we can see in the clip (and definitely the movie if anyone has seen it). He is psychically and mentally abusive to her and other people as well while trying to find out where she went.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ombLA8Gqbpk
Intimacy & Affiliation:
The third clip that I have chosen represents both intimacy and affiliation. This clip is the movie trailer for ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” and yes I still do really enjoy this movie! The clip shows multiple scenes from the movie and how it related to affiliation and intimacy. The scene from this clip that I definitely related to this topic would be when all of the girls come back together with the ‘lucky’ pair of pants, that for some reason fits all of them perfectly even though they are all different sizes (sounds a little stupid, I know). These girls are showing intimacy in the fact that they all have an extremely close bond/relationship with each other. They all care about each other a lot, and look out for each other. Just because they are not physically or sexually intimate doesn’t mean they are not experiencing intimacy. These girls are there for each other in many different aspects of life, the good and bad. When talking about affiliation, this movie relates in a way similar to intimacy. These girls have personal relationships with one another. They have been friends since high school and continue that throughout their college experiences, and always end up back to each other. There are also other scenes from this clip that she one of the girls with her fiancé, and another with her mother. These can all be categorized by affiliation and intimacy, but they are just in different ways/styles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlFayW-dVwA
The first video I have chosen to use as an example for one of the social needs is a video of a woman who is very entertaining. She is driving and telling the viewers about how she is going to the park to meet Peter. Peter is her ex-boyfriend and she is going to the park to try to get him back. She is trying to find affiliation again with Peter. She has changed the way she dresses and does her hair to impress him so hopefully he will come crawling back to her. She even says she is going to tell Peter that she is taking yoga or palates to impress him and make her seem “more white or more educated”. I think this video is extremely funny and I hope you enjoy it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtkU2ch0sRI
The video of Mufasa’s death on Lion King is a good demonstration of power. Scar is trying to find his social need of power but killing his brother and telling Simba to run away. That means that Scar is the only one left to take over the kingdom. He uses his powerful evil plan to become king. He wants to control the kingdom and have everything his way. But as most of us know or you have seen the Lion King, it doesn’t end well for Scar. Good always wins over evil!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6He5Jr1Zpk&feature=fvwrel
The Notebook is a very well-known love story. Rachel Mcadams and Ryan Gosling star in the film. I have chosen the scene where they are in the boat trying to make it in before the rain starts. In the scene you can see their love developing again and Ryan’s character tells Rachel’s character that he wrote her for a year and their love/relationship isn’t over. This is an example of intimacy because they realize in that moment how in love they are with each other and kiss, which leads to something even more intimate. They both find that intimate relationship with each other that they were longing for.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7xf-oj4X8A
The last video I have for an example is from the show One Tree Hill. The character Nathan Scott was a very good high school and college basketball player. He has been struggling to make it to the NBA for several years but from support of his wife, family, friends, and all his hard work he finally makes a NBA team. This scene shows when Nathan tells his wife and his son finds out that he made it to the NBA. This video is an example of achievement. Nathan set a goal, worked very hard for it, and in the end it paid off because his dream came true.

Terms: Social needs, power, affiliation, intimacy, achievement
Power-
This video was brought to my attention by a classmate of mine. In the video a father berates his teenage daughter for writing horrible things about him on Facebook that he found after warning her before to not write anything like it again. He goes through her rant and tells her how good she has it, that now she will not have it so easy, and that she is grounded forever. He then proceeds to shoot her laptop with his handgun! This man clearly had his authority undermined by his daughter and now he is reestablishing it by taking drastic action.
Achievement-
After watching all of the slow mo guy’s videos I chose this one because it was their one year anniversary. It gives you short clips in regular time of what they slowed down to 2000 frames per second throughout the year. My personal favorite is the giant water balloon that wouldn’t break until they had two guys jump on it. It was so cool that they could drop off of a tree onto it and it still wouldn’t break! Regardless, clearly these guys had a need for achievement, particularly performance-goal because they would continually do shots to get just the right slow-mo take, even if that meant sticking their fingers in a mouse/rat trap. Another goal they achieved was that they lasted a whole year making these videos! Hurray! I hope they keep them coming.
Intimacy-
The most recent show I’ve been watching has been Castle which is about a murder mystery writer, Richard Castle, who is shadowing a NY homicide detective, Kate Beckett. In the scene above their captain had just been killed in order to save many members of his crew, including Castle and Beckett. Now, like any good show there is a love interest between the lead characters. They have refused to acknowledge this but they do care a lot for each other mutually and theirs is a warm growing relationship, though not officially yet, it technically is intimate. So naturally Beckett gets shot and passes out and Castle finally lets her know how he feels about her. Luckily she survives for season 4.
Affiliation-
The above clip displays a baby monkey riding backwards on a pig which has sparked the annoying and addicting song playing in the background. I thought that this was an excellent example of affiliation being a deficit driven motive/behavior. As soon as the monkey falls off the pig he immediately freaks out and chases down the pig again. This accurately depicts individuals who have a high social need for affiliation; they get stressed when they don’t get it and are even anxious when they do have others around. In the end it is a catchy song with a cute baby monkey riding backwards on a pig, baby monkey.

Thumbs Up For Rock and Roll: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaIvk1cSyG8. This video demonstrated the social need of achievement. In this video this little boy has just learned to ride a bike and did it successfully. He demonstrated the desire to do well to achieve a standard of excellence. Riding the bike challenged his competence but in the end he discovered he could do it so it was a successful outcome. You can see this when the boy says, "I feel happy of myself." He was very emotional about it in a joyful way which made the event even greater in his eyes. That was a huge accomplishment for him and he uses that emotion to push others into riding bikes as well. "Thumbs up everybody...for rock and roll!"
Peter in the Park: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtkU2ch0sRI. This video demonstrated the social need of affiliation. In this video Tracey is trying to win her man back (Peter) by accidentally running into him in the park. Apparently he is with another woman at this time so Tracey had to "look good" wearing her push-up bra and dye her hair with kool-aid to look more sophisticated. While this video is hilarious it does show that Tracey wants to reestablish or restore her relationship with Peter to escape negative feelings like isolation and loneliness. She was very persistent so I assume she still has strong feelings for Peter. While parts of this could be categorized under intimacy, I believe the bulk of this video demonstrates her need to be wanted and to reject the anxiety Peter is causing her to feel since they split up.
Disney's Sleeping Beauty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aY7FXpoJCE&noredirect=1. This video demonstrated the social need of power. In this video Maleficent is the evil witch/sorcerer that kidnaps and tries to kill Aurora, a princess, because she was not invited to the christening. Maleficent has the desire to make the physical and social world conform to her own personal image of it (complete domination of the kingdom, maybe?). She is striving for that leadership position among the trolls and other creatures and in turn that means she will lead over all the kingdom as well. While this is not necessarily a positive source of power, it does show us the same concepts only in a more negative way.
Marshall and Lily, How I Met Your Mother: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO8tT4ApJwY&feature=related. This video demonstrated the social need of intimacy. This video is kind of a bunch of clips put together from multiple shows but it gives the audience a good idea of what Marshall and Lily's relationship is like: intimate. They both have a social motive for engaging in that warm, close and positive relationship. The majority of the time it does produce positive emotions and isn't a threatening thing in their lives. Even though they do fight at times their love is greater than the argument and they want to continue to be together despite it.
The video that I chose for intimacy was a song by a British You-Tube “star”. The song is called “Drunk” and the video shows with some humor how he is craving for the intimacy with his ex-girlfriend. Because he doesn’t have the intimacy with her he is consistently getting drunk (with his talking cat). I think the video shows a nice portrayal of a person with a high current need for intimacy, being that intimacy is a need for the warm and comfort from a relationship with another person.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2fOum_KWQU
The video that I chose for achievement was a video of a winner of the 2009 national spelling bee. In the video she says that she was ecstatic that she achieved the national title. She also describes how she would spend a lot of time studying and all of the work that she has put into it since second or third grade. Achievement is described as the desire to excel in standard of excellence. The girl in the video has set herself to have a high need for achievement for the rest of her life, as she states that she wants to be a neurosurgeon when she’s older.

The video I found for affiliation is from the move “The Help”. I thought the character of Celia Foote would be perfect for this social need. Affiliation is the need of being with people in fear of rejection. Celia throughout the movie is constantly struggling to be accepted and to find friends, which in turn makes her look desperate and needy. In this clip she is showing her house to her possible new maid, Minny. At the end of the clip she expects Minny to tell her that she won’t work for her, but to her surprise, it is just the opposite. Celia is extremely pleased by this news and shows her appreciation that she has not been rejected again.

The fourth and final need is power. I thought a perfect video for power would be some sort of dictator or a video of Hitler, but that just didn’t seem appropriate even though they have high needs for power, obviously. I decided to go with a clip that was a little less harmless from a very good movie, “The Family Man”. In the beginning of the movie Jack is a powerful business man who has many flings with women, but does not have any very close and committed relationships (which is also a characteristic of a person with a high need for power). In this clip you can see in the beginning the girl is leaving his room as well as the power that is exerted through the view of his room, clothing and apartment.

This first video called "I Like You", is an example of the social need intimacy. The two people in this clip explain the things they like about each other and their relationship. They then show clips of other people or couples saying how it's either dumb that they just say "like" instead of love and others think it's cute. Towards the end of the video, the man told his girlfriend that he basically was over liking her, instead loves her, then proceeds to ask for her engagement, awww. The two people in the short film are satisfying their need for intimacy. They have an established relationship where they know a lot of the little things about each other and use positive adjectives for each other. The engagement is an example of their growth-oriented motive for their relationship. It is clear to the audience that these people have a high need for intimacy that has been satisfied, because throughout the film, besides saying I like you, you can see the couple laughing, smiling, and touching each other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5H2q-Xfp4s&feature=player_embedded
This next video would be an example of power. The video is a mockery of the republican candidates up for election this year and shows a fake Einstein competing against the others. The candidates all must have a high need for power because they need an occupation that holds a high power. The Einstein guy tries to gain support by saying he would legalize everything in order to try to conform the public's views into his own. This is an example of the books variables for presidential effectiveness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urx21kpsB40&feature=player_embedded
This next clip is a trailer for the movie "Bully". The movie is about a young boy who took his own life because he wasn't socially accepted by his peers and how his parents set out to make a difference in other kid's lives who are going through the same thing. The boy who was being bullied had a high need for affiliation, but because of bullying, his needs were not met. He needed to feel approval, acceptance, and security within friends, and as much as he tried the other students were still picking on him. This demonstrates what a powerful effect affiliation has on a person, if one doesn't feel like they belong or accepted, it may push the person to take their own life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAxBpu5d4PU&feature=player_embedded#!
This last video covers the social need of achievement. It's about a 100year old woman who plays nintendo in order to keep her mind active. Playing this new technology is a difficult task at her age, but she adopts a mastery goal in order to overcome the challenge. She mentioned that normally she would forget things the next day, and by playing nintendo it helped significant;y, which is example of the mastery goal of making progress and working hard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWpV15R163o&feature=player_embedded
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POyubf7kSpA - Adam Peterson at basketball game (achievement)
In this video, Adam Peterson is a young boy who is at a basketball game and expresses his higher need for achievement by describing how he made a shot on the court. By smiling and using a ‘higher-pitched’ tone of voice, he is also displaying that his need was positively filled.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL4IcNeYV2M - Love and Other Drugs (intimacy)
In this scene, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character tells Anne Hathaway’s character that he loves her. He displays a high need for intimacy by becoming very anxious and developing a quickening heart rate before trying to express the words “I love you”. He continuously repeats himself and Anne Hathaway’s character reveals a low need for intimacy because she tells him that he does not love her and that he needs to stop staying that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0N6xuhcLt0 - Pump Up the Volume (affiliation)
Pump Up the Volume is a rebellious video about having complete autonomy over one’s life and opening up with how you feel and what you want to do. This is one of my favorite movies, as well as this scene from the movie. The heterosexual male describing his experience about being tricked into meeting up with a guy only to find out he is to be made fun of for being gay/himself. By saying that he did not want to cry in front of them shows he was hurt by the act but is probably more hurt because his affiliation need to express a relationship with another man was hindered, showing he has a high need of affiliation with other heterosexuals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwNsNiuaakc&feature=related - The Sopranos (power)
The Sopranos is a TV series set in New Jersey that displays daily tasks of mob members from business to family situations. In this scene, Tony Soprano (the boss of his mob family) talks over Richie (who has recently disobeyed Tony) by threatening him and raising his voice by saying (cleanly), “I’m the one who calls the shots here.” Not only does he display power by saying this, but Richie (who usually likes to talk back) respects him by saying okay and that it will never happen again. By Richie respecting Tony, Tony’s high status and influence is displayed and expresses his high power need.
I started this assignment by “browsing” youtube as suggested and had little luck. So instead I took from movies and videos I already had knowledge of and took examples from there.
The first video is actually a song from the movie “Tangled.” In the video Rapunzel’s mother is singing to her, telling her reasons to not leave her tower. Rapunzel has never left her tower and wishes to see the world. Rapunzel’s mother has a high need for power. She controls Rapunzel and gets anxious when her daughter brings up leaving the tower. The book describes someone with a high need for power as having the desire to “impact, control, or influence over another person, group, or the world at large.” Rapunzel’s mother wants to have complete power over each move Rapunzel makes. However, her need to control is detrimental to her daughter’s development. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi8kYcl2Y38
The second video I picked is a trailer for “The Sandlot.” The sandlot is a movie about a young boy who has recently moved and is in need of new friends. He finds himself trying to interact with a group of kids who play baseball. Scotty has a high need for affiliation, and is looking to satisfy that need by joining the group of boys. He fears they will reject him, which they do at first. He does things, such as stealing his step father’s baseball, to become a part of the group. He pleases them and does little to stand up for himself because he just wants to fit in. Initially when he begins associating with the boys he feels relief that he has joined a group so his mother and step father will stop bothering him about making friends. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QDq-e1GbjE
The third clip I chose is from the movie “Jack”. This movie follows the life of a boy Jack who has a genetic condition that makes him physically grow at a very fast rate; much so that is this clip, at his high school graduation, he appears to be in his seventies. The reason I chose this clip is to demonstrate the need for achievement. Jack was a boy born with a lot going against him. However Jack is able to fight the odds and be successful in life. This show that Jack has a high need for achievement. He knows that he isn’t going to live long but chooses to perform well and build competency just to fulfill his own needs. We see in the clip Jack is graduating from high school. For anyone, graduation is a great accomplishment that requires a lot of intrinsic motivation. Not only does he graduate, but he is the valedictorian; something that cannot be achieved without mastery goals and a desire to be an intelligent, well skilled individual. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HuEkCUZOR0&feature=related
The final clip I chose is from one of my favorite movies, “The Holiday.” This clip is from the beginning of the movie where we are introduced to two different women who are having trouble with love. The woman I want to focus on is Kate Winslet’s character who demonstrates a high need for intimacy. I understand intimacy is not just about love in a dating relationship, but that’s what this video happens to focus on. Anyways, Iris is an individual who long for an intimate relationship with her coworker. She wants to build a loving, caring, warm relationship with Jasper. Iris is someone who listens and engages in deep conversation as we can see through her interaction with Jasper. She remembers the little things, like the book she gave Jasper for Christmas, and has genuine concern for others throughout the rest of the movie. This all shows that she values interpersonal interactions, a trait of someone with a need for intimacy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlT5oeuk7UE
My first video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlFBMtEF4Xw&feature=related. Whenever I think of achievements, my first thought always has to do with athletics. This video shows a huge achievement. This female runner from Minnesota is running a 600 meter race. She leads the whole race and then with 1 lap left she trips and falls. She then falls to the back and has some major catching up to do. You have to remember there is only one lap left and she's dead last at this point. She sprints so fast and catches back up with everyone that she ends up winning the race. This shows the social need of achievement because she is competing with others and herself in an event. Her fall didn't matter, she had a standard of excellence that she wanted to achieve and this is a very inspiration video.
My second video shows the definition of intimacy perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GNxdc-wlw4. In this clip, it shows how much these two people care and love each other. Jerry loved Holly so much that after he passed away he planned out a journey/adventure for Holly to show how much he loved her. You can tell by just watching that they had a close, warm, positive, relationship together.
My video for affiliation is from a scene from the movie "Made of Honor". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFQN3biQ4x8. This scene is when all the guys go play basketball to talk about girls and the issues they have in their life. But every time they show up at the gym their is a guy who always wants to play with them. You can tell by looking at the guy that she just wants to be accepted and wants friends. He might come off a bit too needy for the other guys.
My final video is for the social need, power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_jBeSWK804. This video shows a great example of power because Barack Obama has so much power in our country. Obama is our president and has many characteristics of needing, wanting and achieving impact, control and influence. To be a president you need to have the desire to lead. If you have the leadership quality then there is a good chance you have a high social need for power.
Achievement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdPQ3QxDZ1s&feature=related
This video demonstrates the need for achievement very well. We all think of Michael Jordan as the best basketball player that has ever played the game, but he didn’t get there based on chance. Michael Jordan has a high need for achievement, meaning he had a strong desire to do well and be excellent. He was performance-approached and wanted to do well for himself. Since his need for achievement was so high, he made sure to practice and do whatever it took to achieve to standard of excellence that he desired. This video is a good example of how his hard work and strong needs paid off and made him the amazing basketball player he was and always will be.
Intimacy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R71UQFWk4E8
This video demonstrates intimacy between a couple. It is apparent that the boy and girl both share a high need for intimacy because they are so secure in their relationship that they do not let the public stop them from expressing their intimate feelings. They have a warm relationship that holds little threat of rejection because they are both so into one another. I believe this video was taken in Europe which would make sense because Europeans have different views when it comes to intimacy and seem to have a much higher need, or show that at least.
Power
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNYmK19-d0U
I chose to look up a video of Obama speaking to represent the need for power. Being the president of the United States is the single most powerful position in the country. Obama has a high need for power which is needed in order to make it all the way to the top and control a country. He is a leader and has the need and desire to have an impact on others. This video is a speech he gave after catching Osama Bin Laden which was a task that has been attempted for years. Being able to be the president that succeeded proves that his need for power was high.
Affiliation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvx-q2Hadxo
When I read the definition of affiliation, the need to please others and gain their approval, I instantly think of the term ‘suck-ups.’ I think I have this strong instinctive feeling because my own need for affiliation is so low. I think it is important to please and be pleased with yourself before you can do the same for others. This video pokes fun at suck-ups and just shows that people will do whatever it takes to fit in for have people like them and will go to drastic of comical ways to do that.
My first video is on achievement. This clip is from a 60 minutes interview with Michael Phelps. He asked to recall his gold medal finish in the 100 meter butterfly in the 2008 Olympics. In this race he came from behind and won by .01 of a second. Phelps sits with Anderson Cooper and they watch the video of him winning the race while Phelps talks about what is going through his mind. He comments about how when he realized he won the race he was overcome with emotion for this achievement. He splashes in the water, raises his hands in the air, and shouts for joy after winning. He is definitely is high need achiever as he chooses a very difficult task to be an Olympic champion swimmer. He is persistent is practice and in racing puts worth extreme effort to be the best in the world.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIBVTYyRjC0&feature=fvsr
The second video demonstrates the need for intimacy. This is a scene from the movie Top Gun where Maverick is trying to pick up Charlie in a bar. He has had his eye on her for a while and is has need to establish an intimate relationship with her. (He also has a need for speed, buts that’s another story) To get her attention and find a way to start a conversation with her, he serenades her with the song “You’ve lost that loving feeling,” with the help of his fellow military buddies. He approaches her while singing and is soon right in front of her keeping his on her eyes. She tells him he can sit next to her and he does. He leans in while they begin a flirtatious conversation. This scene shows Maverick’s need to establish a warm, close, interpersonal relationship with her. From their body language and facial expressions we can see that they are both experiencing very positive emotions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTbASqoqH3Q
The next video demonstrates power. It is the opening scene from the movie Patton. George Patton was a famous United States general from World War II. In this movie he is played by George C. Scott. It is perhaps the most powerful speeches ever in cinema. It displays power in many ways. He is in full army uniform, with medals, a gun, and a whip. We are looking up at him on a stage with a huge American flag behind him. In his speech he is attempting to inspire his troops to follow him in battle. He is trying to make them conform to what he wants. His language is very aggression and inspiring. He talks of killing other soldiers and the glory of winning the war. Patton demonstrates the leadership motive pattern of power. He has a high for power as he his leading troops in a war and needs them to fight to the death. He shows both a low need for intimacy and a high level of inhibition. The great physical space between him and everyone else shows lack of intimacy and sets him apart. The fact that his appearance, the stage, and his speech are carefully crafted shows his high level of inhibition.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh9S1Hk975U
The final video covers affiliation. I choose a scene from Vanilla Sky. It shows Cameron Diaz’s character demonstrating a high need for affiliation in a disturbing way. Tom Cruz’s character sees her as just a casual friend, but Diaz is obsessed with him. In the scene she is driving them in a car. He starts a relaxed conversation with her and she quickly turns the table on him after asking when he did he stop caring about her. She accelerates the car driving erratically. She starts yelling at him that she loves him and that he doesn’t ever care about her even though he should. Fearing for his life, Cruise says attempts to pacify her by saying ok I love you. But it is too late. She continues to speed up and when he tries to stop her she crashes the car. This scene shows her high need of approval and her high need for intimacy. She is intense and remembers every word he has ever said. Her high need of affiliation with him and his world drives her to attempt to kill them both after feeling rejected by him.

Terms: achievement, intimacy, power, affiliation
This video, and a lot of the other “am I ugly” videos show people with a high need for affiliation. They seem very needy and their high need is shown by showing pictures of themselves and asking what people think of them. They are trying to calm anxieties and monitor whether others approve or approve of them by the comments people leave. They have a insecurity about themselves for whatever reason, and want approval from strangers across the country about their physical appearance. These videos make me so sad, most of these girls are so young, and still need this approval from so many other people. Some of these videos have millions of views, and get comments that are encouraging, but some are so hurtful and disguisting. The point of these videos was so they could hear from others that they are pretty and to avoid negative emotions such as loneliness and disapproval. This particular video, because it is about being pretty or ugly, could almost be a need for intimacy too, but I see more of the need for affiliation here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D9mqqkgH-0a
This next video is a good example for the need for intimacy. These two girls found a letter from a guy to a girl who has a boyfriend. It is pretty funny because of the way the girl is reading it, even mentioning the grammatical errors, but it shows how desperate he is because she has a boyfriend. He has a strong desire to be in a strong interpersonal relationship with this girl. He talks about kissing her and holding her and he cries for her, and wants this feeling to be reciprocal. This is a bit dramatic of an example, but it is a perfect example of a very high need for intimacy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM2U6zGN8nM
This next video of cult leader Jim Jones(from the movie) talking to people about how marriages aren’t allowed and some other BS rules he gave as a cult leader. This shows his extremely high need for power. He has the desire for making the physical and social world of his “people” conform to his image of it. He strived for leadership and people listened to him. He talked 900 people into drinking kool aid and committing suicide, a very influential leader. He experienced frequent impulses of aggression.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT4tYpFNQrc
the need for achievement was pretty easy to find on youtube, simply because there are millions of people videotaping themselves doing things for others to see them doing it well. There are how to videos and videos of people just doing things to show others they did it. They choose moderately difficult tasks and put themselves on the internet doing it for others to see. Here are a few different clips of peoples need and high need for achievement.
How to change a car battery:

and even how to French braid your own bangs!!

The first social need I looked for in a youtube video was achievement. Its a video of Danny MacAskill performing unbelievably on a mountain bike. This clip shows a strong desire to master skills and accomplish something great. The things Danny does on his bike have been seen before in bmxing, but never on a mountain bike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Fa5zAbP9w
The next video I searched or was a bit harder to locate. I looked for a youtube video that displayed socail need for intimacy. The video is titled 'Jamin's Downtown Disney Flashmob Performance.' In it Jamin has organized a flash mob to dance a song titled 'marry you' for his girlfriend. He joins and proposed is the end. This shows how much effort and risk Jamin is willing to go through to please his partner and secure their positive relationship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su1YLAjty-U
The video I chose to use to represent power is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I just thought it was a good representation of people's desire to conform their environment to their own personal image. The video is called 'Obey God and He Will Save Your Soul.' The video describes how different people interperet the rules of christianity, and how everyone else's interperetation of the rules is wrong besides this one. I thought the speaker was gaining control and influence over his listeners, who then believe they can control and influence their fate by behaving as the speaker advises.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdpCmbc-9HE
I chose a clip from Solomon Asch's study of conformity to demonstrate affiliation. In this experiment a group is asked questions. there is only one control subject while the rest are part of the expirement. The group is asked simple questions of common sense such as 'which line is longer.' The group members answer the questions wrongly, and 37% the control agrees with them, even when the answer is clearly wrong. While the video is meant to display conformity, and demonstrate uninimity, I thought post interveiws with the controls showed affiliation. I think the controls were afraid of being isolated from the group, so they ignored their common sense and submitted to group pressure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPEDS-0jMgs
The video I found for intimacy is a wedding proposal. The guy makes a video trailer, to play at the movie she is at, of him asking her dad for permission for her hand in marriage. All the while someone is recording her live reaction. He talks about how much he loves her and this displays the intimacy they have between them. He wants to have a long-term committed relationship with her. With her saying “yes” they fulfill their need of intimacy. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnVAE91E7kM
I found a video to show the need for power. Seniors in high school, in this video, talk about how to intimidate the freshman. They have a high need to control others. The seniors show they have power over the freshman. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyRvsYEyPxw
The Big Bang Theory had a clip on www.youtube.com about an equation to be able to make friends. This shows that Sheldon has a high need for affiliation. He really wants to find common interests with people to fill the need to belong. The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0xgjUhEG3U
The American Idol finale of 2008 clip displayed achievement. David Cook starts to cry and shows what an accomplishment it was to work so hard and make it to the end and win. He proved his abilities to America every week through singing. The link to this clip is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h616-b0pKPw
This video demonstrates affiliation and intimacy. Intimacy is represented because I know the bond that is formed between a dog and a child. Both the dog and the child develop a warm and fulfilling relationship and that is the essence of the social need intimacy. In the video we can see the attachment between the dog and the child. I feel that affiliation is also represented in this clip because both the dog and child are acting out on their need to form close relationships with others. I know that it may seem weird for a human to be close friends with a dog, but as a dog owner I know quite well that it is possible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TL5CSPFzTU
This video shows a sense of achievement because of the story behind it. Jeremy Lin was practically a nobody 3 weeks ago as an undrafted player that had trouble finding a team to stay on. Lin never stopped working and eventually worked his way into the starting lineup for the New York Knicks. This shows his social need for achievement because he always wanted to be a better player than he was and worked to get the recognition that he wanted. This video also shows his sense of achievement because he hit a game winning shot. Doing such a thing made him feel on top of the world and like nothing could take his confidence away from him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR3NhE8fBs8
This video shows power or the lack there of. President Obama has more power than any man or woman in the United States and in this particular instance he lost some of it. Bill O’Reilly caught him off guard and stripped the power in the conversation away from him. President Obama instantly got defensive because he was uncomfortable with not being in control of the situation.

AFFILIATION- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkf5SSdfQYA
This is a bonus clip from the show “New Girl.” It is an introduction video for a dating website, done of one of the characters, Schmidt. This video shows Schmidt’s need for affiliation. He is trying very hard to impress whoever watches the video. It appears that his character went through a lot of work to impress the people on the dating website, and hopefully gain the approval of a woman.
POWER-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRpQAErm3wo
This clip from Modern Family shows Clair’s struggle for power. She is trying to get the whole family to work together to put on a wonderful Halloween. Everyone else in the family has other stuff going on and isn’t has concerned. The clip ends with Claire telling the family that it may be a crazy holiday, but it is HER holiday. She is willing to put up with her family and all the chaos that follows them, as long as she can be in charge of Halloween, and she can have the power.
INTIMACY- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IeX5dwJAfQ&feature=related
The notebook is a movie all about the need for intimacy. Noah starts this clip by saying, “It’s gonna be hard.” By stating that he knows and is expecting their relationship to have rough patches, he shows just how much he wants to have a warm and secure relationship with Allie.
ACHIEVEMENT- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKL5SJLCchs
I think what makes this clip about achievement is what Rachel says as soon as she walks in. She says, “Good, you guys are all here!” It is obvious that she has good news, and she wants to tell her friends about it. Rachel was given an interview at ralph Lauren and she was very proud of herself. She was also very excited to tell her friends about this achievement.
In the ways of achievement people usually would describe some world class athlete, business man, highly educated student, or someone who is saving the planet of its people. To me achievement is somebody who takes the ordinary and makes themselves extraordinary at it. However, even a small achievement is worthy of such credit because if you, someone else, or something else are better for what you have done then you have achieved in my mind. This kid I found on youtube had taken something small and turned it into his own and he achieved ridiculous tricks and manuevers that not may could pull off. This was filmed by 10 and 11 year old Dakota Schuetz at Bay City Michigan Buffalo NY and San Clemente. This video was for a 6th grade talent show, which had to include a magic trick, which is the ending. Anyone who watches this video will be amazed that someone is achieving great things with a simple Razor Scooter.

When I tried to come across intimacy videos on youtube I was struck with a lot of romantic mumbo jumbo that is fairly obvious intimacy, but didn't capture what I thought to be an intimate setting or moment, but then I had an idea. I had seen this music video once that captured a series of moments that craved a simple but of intimacy and the result is devastating because the intimacy is never found and the results leave the subjects lonely. I am talking about the music video by the band Rise Against and their song titled 'Make it Stop (September's Children)" This song is all about suicide. The song tracks through moments in teenagers lives where they meet the breaking point and can't take it anymore. Essentially they are lacking any intimacy with peers and we are to assume that their parents aren't there either. One of the lyrics says, "make it stop, 18 years have been pushed to the edge." That is way to long to go without intimacy which is necessary for living in our very social world.

Next we look into the need for power. There is a fine line of power. No power can destroy a pushover's heart, yet too much power can destroy the world of the greedy. In a clip from Star Wars we find Anakin Skywalker rising to his new title of Darth Vader. He is pledged to destroy the dark side of the force but is overcome by his need for power. In the beginning his need for power is good because he wishes to stop people from dying, like his wife. However, he soon becomes to powerful in the later movies and turns his power into greed and tries to destroy life rather than bring life to those on the brink.

Our last need is for affiliation and it is a very vital social need especially with this ever growing mass media world. This examples comes from the biggest social media website in the world, Facebook. This video features a girl named Dani who post videos discussing issues that bother her. This first half of this video talks about the overly friendly people on Facebook. She is very annoyed with a few people she knows who constantly message and talk to her seconds after getting on Facebook. Our book tells us that people who are very extroverted and social have a high need for affiliation and this girl doesn't seem to realize these people just wish to be part of her life and to be affiliated with someone. She needs a lesson in chapter seven of our book.
Sorry about all the cursing, not my intention

The first video I chose demonstrates affiliation. It’s a clip from that 70’s show where the gang is sitting the basement and trying to come up with plans for Halloween. Affiliation is the process of establishing, maintaining and/or restoring a positive, affective relationship with another person or persons. This is demonstrated by everyone participating in the conversation, making comments (whether they are smart-ass or respectable), and effectively brainstorming. I think by people making smart-ass comments to each other, this demonstrates a sense of close friendship where everyone feels comfortable enough to do that.
Clip 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBB6ls0vEA8
The second video I chose demonstrates intimacy. It’s a clip from that 70’s show where Donna is at the radio station with Eric and they are discussing the issue of whether or not she should wear a bikini for a certain promotion with her boss and co-worker. Donna is not comfortable showing that much skin just for her job. Her boss fires her and Eric sticks up for Donna. Intimacy is demonstrated through interpersonal concern, caring, warmth and commitment, emotional connectedness and love. I think Eric sticking up for Donna definitely demonstrates intimacy.
Clip 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s9f9hBLOKc
The third video I chose demonstrates power. It’s a clip from that 70’s show where Red is doing bed checks. He previously caught Eric smoking weed so he felt the need to demonstrate power by intruding into his room without permission. Power is the desire for making the physical and social world conform to one’s personal image for it. High-power-need individuals strive for leadership and recognition in small groups, experience frequent impulses and aggression.
Clip 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=kXZwQcyxg2o
The fourth video I chose demonstrates achievement. It’s a clip from that 70’s show where the Forman family plus Hyde are at the dinner table and Eric “burns” Lori. Lori is giving Hyde a hard time and calling him a free loader because he is currently living in their house, but not providing anything for the family. Achievement is the desire to do well relative to a standard of excellence. This clip demonstrates achievement because Eric is trying to excel as a friend by sticking up for Hyde. Yet, he is also trying to excel by talking back to his sister Lori so she seems less inferior.

This was a pretty difficult task, finding random videos that showed an example of each of the four social needs we have been discussing. I do not surf the web too often or go on YouTube too much, so this was an experience for me. The following four video clips were what I found with the link to each immediately following the summary.
This clip is from The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It’s entitled. “Sophia Grace and Rosie perform Moment 4 Life”. It shows two little girls who have become very popular for their renditions of Nicki Minaj songs. These young ladies, Sophia Grace (dark-hair) and Rosie (blond hair), are only 8 years old and can successfully sing entire songs that are extremely difficult even for an adult. I would definitely say these videos and performances these girls do are fulfilling a need for achievement. Sophia Grace is the more outspoken one who isn’t afraid of anything, while Rosie is her “side-kick”. The girls began performing on a previous Ellen show episode alongside their idol herself, Nicki Minaj. They practice and practice they had told her. This episode is just another example of how their need for achievement is very strong.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPbY5ht6FtU&feature=related
This next video I found was entitled, “Things Single People Say on Valentine’s Day!” The boy in the videos, “deefizzy”, talks about how great it is to be single on Valentine’s Day because of all of the cheap candy the next day. He also puts down the importance of needing a Valentine, and claims he’s fine the way he is. Then he proceeds to break down and cry, claiming he wished he had a Valentine. I believe this shows a definite need for intimacy. He feels alone and wishes he had a partner to share the holiday with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-LWv5xM0vE
This video clip is uploaded by “JarmaineTV”. She does many different random videos/blogs, and it seems like she does this for a need for affiliation. She claims to have many emails and comments she responds to and I think this is what she is searching for when she uploads these videos. This video contains random talk about her friends, what she does during the day, plans to do, etc. just making up things and putting them online for others to watch pretty much guarantees you some feedback and some sort of affiliation with others.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0v6u43OZX0&feature=related
This fourth and final video displays a need for power by the officer videotaped. The persons videotaping are being questioned about a crime committed the previous Monday and are “suspected” of being nearby the incident. The videographer protests and asks why he is being assaulted when he has done nothing wrong, and the officer claims he does not need to have reasonable cause, simply because he has the power to do what he is doing, and that he can use force if the people questioned do not comply with being searched. The officer does end up using physical force to try to search the victims.

My first video is of Lance Armstrong and his greatest moment in cycling. This displays achievement because Lance has done what no other cycler in the history of cycling and won the most prestigious bike race The Tour De France, 7 times. Lance also battled cancer and almost died, but came back to the sport even stronger than he left. This clip just shows how he achieved so much in his career as a professional cyclist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF4CWCXirZ8
My second video is from the Lion King and it is when Simba and Nala are falling in love. Since the animals take on human personalities in this movie it is showing how two individuals need intimacy. This clip shows them being playful and then becoming more serious and falling in love, and by the end of the song they are together and later end up having a family together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1--l_Tv9zA
This clip displays affiliation. This is from the show The Bachelor, and it was a girl who constantly needed reassurance because of her anxiety about being rejected. I watched this season, and it always annoyed me how high her need was for affiliation. This clip gets to her anxiety towards the end when she is needing reassurance that he feels the same way, and ultimately this lead to her getting dumped.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjmjtOnDyYs
The final video is for power. This is a clip from Elf, when the boss of a big story company comes to the office. This man is a midget, so he over compensates and tries to assert his power. He is clearly interested in status when he names off all of his material possessions and houses that he owns. He is also very bossy when it came to the temperature of the car he was picked up in, and turned them down initially because of the lack of respect that he received. He may have been small but he asserted his power to be intimidating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXL9mYWtPzM
Achievement: This video clip briefly explains a great achievement of a young girl that I met at a leadership conference. Her name is Rebecca Kantar. Rebecca founded “minga”, but she started it off with a fundraiser at the age of 13. After she watched a horrific video of human trafficking statistics, she couldn’t sleep until she did something to make a change. At age 13 many people didn’t take her seriously, which presented a challenge that she overcame. In this case, there were no standards or expectations for her to do anything about child sex trade and human trafficking. However, she challenged herself and convinced enough people about the seriousness of the issue, and now her foundation is successful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXOTSmEMfvA
Affiliation: Everyone feels the need to associate with others. Affiliation has an effect on our behaviors throughout the day. This clip shows three (cartoon) people at work in cubicles and how miserable they are because they aren’t affiliated with anything but a computer screen. However, when the cubicles are removed and the workers are able to converse, they are more productive and enjoy their jobs.

Power: Even after imprisoned, Adolf Hitler had the idea to build the Nazis into a proper, disciplined, political party. Hitler was a political extremist that took his opportunity during a tremendous economic downfall. Yet, through all the damage he did to an entire race, he established enough power to have millions of people follow him. When considering power as a social need, Hitler displayed impact, control and influence over many

I chose a video clip from the movie the “The Notebook” because I think it displays intimacy perfectly. The last thing Noah says in this trailer is, “I read to her and she remembers”. The book mentions that a person with a high need for intimacy thinks about friends and relationships, and writes stories about positive affect-laden relationships. Noah wrote a book about their relationship from the beginning to help her remember him. They showed negative emotions when they weren’t near each other and were clearly happier when they were together.
The first video I looked at is an example of achievment. I looked at the video of the 2010 Winter Olympics in ice skating. Yu Na Kim was crowned ice skating champion of the winter olympics. This shows achievment because she has been working hard her entire career. She was the junior olympic champion in 2005, and continued to grow and work hard. You can see in the performance on her face and technique how much she dedicates her life to ice skating and it appears that she loves performing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFMDlrHmdMw
Affiliation is rooted in a fear of interpersonal rejection. People need affiliation for establishing, mainting a positive relationship. I chose a clip from the movie "Mean Girls" when all four of the girls are on the phone with someone at some point. They take different views and talk about the other one when on the phone. This shows affiliation, because they all want Regina to like them and to accept them because she is considered the most "popular" girl in school. They just talk bad about whoever and do whatever Regina asks to please her and to be accepted. They don't know anyone really outside of their group so they have a fear of rejection and being lonely.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awow8HpWNcg&feature=related
Intimacy expresses the need for being loved, in a long lasting relationship with a partner, friends and family. I chose the music video by Lee Brice, "A Woman Like You" He is telling his girlfriend of all the things he could be doing if he hadn't met her, like fishing, golfing, hanging out with his friends and eating a lot more fried chicken. But than he tells her that she is more important by saying he sucks at golfing, fishing is boring and her chicken is much better. It shows how he would give anything for this woman, the love of his life. It shows that these two are very much in love and have high ratings in intimacy, and it is being fulfilled.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbAp5nphTz4
The last social need is power. Power is the desire to make the physcial and social world conform to someones own personal image.I chose a clip from the classic Disney movie, "Cinderella." In this scene it is when the mother and the step sisters ruin Cinderella's beautiful dress becuase of jealousy and because they can. They do this to control Cinderlla and to manipulate her in thinking she is not worthy of going to the ball. This shows the need for power with the sisters and the mother because they do not want Cinderella to gain control or get anything that is above them because they feel they are better than her. To keep their power they have her do chores and ruin her dress.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbAp5nphTz4
The first clip I chose for the social need achievement comes from the movie The Help. In this clip the main character, Skeeter, is being lectured by her mother because she isn’t engaged or married like many girls her age. However, once her mother starts talking about a girl who got engaged once she started working a job Skeeter chimes in happily that she has had just been hired by the local newspaper. By getting that job Skeeter feels like she has accomplished something every important and is excited because it’s a start to her future in journalism and writing. One can then see that she is likely to have a high need for achievement because once her mother criticizes her for getting the job, she gets annoyed and put off by her mothers comment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fqF_EzUzXk
The next video clip comes from the movie Wall-E and it represents the social need for intimacy. In the movie the main character is a robot named Wall-E, who has been alone for hundreds of years on earth without any companion or sign of life. Then once the robot Eve shows up for a mission, Wall-E won’t leave her side and he opens up to her by showing her where he lives and then gives her a present. Then, even after Eve goes into a dormant state, Wall-E pulls her along and interacts with her even though she isn’t reciprocating anything sign of life or interest. Therefore, as one can see from this clip, Wall-E shows a high need for intimacy, which isn’t surprising since he has been alone for so long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJUOaGyQEH8
The social need for power can be seen perfectly in this clip from the movie The Lion King. In this clip one can see that the characters Mufasa and Scar both have a high need for power. Mufasa is naturally a leader because he is king, and his goal is to try and understand why Scar skipped out when his son Simba was presented to the animal kingdom. Mufasa also shows that he has gained some power because Zazu addresses him with great respect and shows his devotion to him. Scar’s need for power is seen when he traps the mouse in his claw and admits that he will never be king, but he does it in the sense that he feels like it is unfair. Then it seems that Scar shows his power when he says he’s going to kill the mouse.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8wgXRNYcPM
The last clip I’m watched comes from the television show New Girl. This video clip shows Jess’s need for affiliation. During the clip Jess is complaining to two friends about a discussion she had with another girl. Jess admits that the girls made her feel like she wasn’t accepted and that she was criticizing her for no reason. Jess is rather upset by this because she feels like she did nothing wrong and somewhat rejected just because she was being herself. Thus this hurt Jess’s feeling and acted negatively on her need for affiliation.

The first need I found a video for was power. I could easily come up with instances of all the needs (except for perhaps intimacy) but power is a HUGE part of it. I picked a Toddlers and Tiaras clip. As much as I hate the show, it fascinates me that people's minds actually function this way. Anyway, I see displays of power needs coming from both the mom and the daughter, Karmen, in this clip. The mom spray tans Karmen and Karmen starts crying, saying she doesn't want it, and the mom tells her to quit whining and continues telling the cameraman "oh, Karmen loves it, I know she does". To me, it seems like she's trying really hard to control the environment in her home by making Karmen go through unpleasant things in order to "look her best". It also seems that the mom in trying to influence the viewer by continually repeating that she's doing this all for Karmen because the girl "loves it" and "wants to do pageants". Karmen also says that her mother is the one who does all her hair and makeup because she wants her to look her best. This is another power play that the mother is trying for. She wants to have complete control over what happens at the pageant, even though it's for the girl. She does the dance moves out in the audience right along with her daughter and gets upset when Karmen messes up. She wants the crown/title/whatever to display that her daughter is the winner because then SHE gets the crown/title/etc as well. The winnings from the pageant are prestige possessions for the girl and the mother. The ultimate goal is to get them, and they can show their power by displaying such things.
Power clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORcBTC7TiVY
For achievement, I found a short clip of a kid fainting at a spelling bee and STILL getting up to spell the word. I think it's nuts for a lot of reasons. Mostly because nobody got up to catch or help him, but also because his need to prove his competence and spell the word correctly is super high. Any reasonable person would understand if he exited the stage, got some water, and just chilled. I mean, he's a little kid, it's be cruel to force him to stay up there when something is overwhelming enough to make him faint. I don't know if it's nerves or the heat or what, but fainting is generally a sign that the brain can't handle something. This kid's need for achievement is high enough that, in this moment, it outranks his biological needs. If the kid is that young and smart enough to be in competitions spelling out words I've never even heard of, part of his need for achievement is likely socialized into him from a very early age. He's grown up knowing that being really good at something is what he wants to do. He's oriented towards mastery and strongly values doing well. If he wasn't, he could have used the fainting spell as a valid excuse out of the spelling bee without anyone thinking less of him for doing it.

So, my room mate and I just saw The Vow, so I had to work that into this post too c: I just grabbed the trailer for it, because it gives the general idea of the movie well enough. I initially went to the movie because I was all "Sweet, retrograde amnesia, we're totally talking about this in Intro, I can use it to reference to so my students understand better". I know it's a movie, but since it's based on a true story of a woman who went through the same thing (and never regained her memory but ended up with her original husband anyway) I figure it works. Leo, the husband, is obviously trying to fill his intimacy need, and the energy and drive behind his actions are so strong because he had his need completely fulfilled and suddenly he didn't any more. His need is so great that it's more like a pain to him, and the only way to fix it is by making Paige fall in love with him again. He continually tries to regain the closeness and warmth through the innocent, automatic touches and things he used to do, but she doesn't respond to them in the same way any more. The need is strengthened by the rejection and loneliness he feels when his wife wakes up and thinks he is her doctor. There are a lot more examples from the movie, but I don't want to go and spoil all of it, because it's totally worth seeing.
Intimacy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8swF2-R6X9A
The last clip I chose was one of the It Gets Better clips. This girl, Lizzie, is speaking out against bullying, and this clip speaks really strongly about people's needs for affiliation in a couple ways. The first is the affiliation needs of the bullies. People bully because it gives them a 'group' to belong to as far as affiliation is concerned. I know there's power needs and such in there, but I'm just gonna focus on affiliation for this one. There wouldn't be as many issues with bullying if it was something that almost nobody did. People want in with a group, that group has a target or targets that they pick on, the person adopts said behaviors in order to belong. The second way this is about affiliation is that it speaks to those who are being bullied, who probably don't have a lot of interpersonal relationships. Lizzie says several times "you're not alone", which is very comforting to people. People with high-affiliation needs fear rejection and suffer from a lot of anxiety from it, and by telling the people watching the video that they're not alone and they deserve better, she's basically saying that she accepts them, other people will accept them, and that they should stand up for themselves. She reassures them that they're socially valuable. Affiliation is deficit-oriented as a need, and the people she's speaking towards are more than likely experiencing a deficit in affiliation.
And it's just an awesome clip.

Social Needs
Achievement: When I went looking for achievement I wanted to find something that showed the process of people working to accomplish something and not just receiving the end product reward. I believe I found that in the following clip. This clip shows a bunch of kids competing against each other to win a challenge. They had to study from books before this challenge to learn a bunch of history material and then they were suppose to have a challenge pop quiz over this material. There were three teams with a lot of kids on each team. A question would get asked and then they teams would have to slingshot the two wrong answer balloons and leave the right answer. The first team to get to the right answer first won and the first team to do this three times won overall. I believe this clip shows how hard people work even at a young age in childhood to succeed and fulfill the need of achievement. This clip shows the children’s motivation to win the challenge and shows the concepts of moderate difficult tasks and competition. This clip also shows the excitement of succeeding and accomplishing achievement as well as the let down when you don’t win.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIMIMgQW1lM&feature=related
Affiliation: In this clip there are two girls that went to high school together and they talk about how it used to be and how they are now. One of them was clearly the popular girl and the other one was not. One topic they talk about was how in high school the popular girl would get all the roles in the school plays and the other would try out but wouldn’t get them. She then went on to say that the unpopular girl did props and when they cast was rehearsing she would stare at them from behind the scenes. I think this shows the need for affiliation because the unpopular girl clearly tried to get into groups and even when she failed at getting a part she still tried to participate. The affiliation need can also cause fear and anxiety if that need is not being met. I also think this clip shows that in a way because you can tell that the unpopular girl felt left out and was trying to make excuses every time the popular girl said something less flattering or embarrassing about her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1agFzE5Kkk
Intimacy: The next clip is a mother and daughter discussing how the mom still does her daughter’s laundry and doesn’t mind. I picked this clip because intimate relationships can be between best friends, spouses or family members. It just has to be that deeper connection with somebody we like and trust. I think this clip shows how the mother and daughter are in tune with each other and care about each other enough that they don’t mind helping each other out and don’t feel like it’s a burden.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K138e7BmOt4
Power: The last clip shows a hockey game. During the game some players get into a fight and it keeps escalating. There are also other fights that break out as a result. I choose this slide because aggressive sports is an outlet for the power need. Hockey fits that qualification. On top of that fighting is another sign or outlet for the power need and these fights show that as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1-25s4uwFQ
This assignment was a tricky one. I had to do some searching to find videos that worked for this. So, I hope they can be appreciated and be found to have the social needs we've learned about.
First, I'll start off with achievement. Which actually could be called mastery in this video or a high level of competence. The guy in this video has a desire to be one of the fastest typist ever. He even has an advanced keyboard to help him type faster. In this clip, the typist challenges everyone to a typing challenge. He says he is the fastest ever and no one can beat him. This is related to achievement because the man strives to be the best at what he does. He is motivated by the competition and feels a sense of pride knowing that he can type faster than most people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA71Y1jttSc&feature=b-mv
Intimacy is the social need I'm trying to target in the next video. This clip is kind of up in the air because it involves wildlife. However, in the video, Kevin Richardson has created a close bond with lions in his wildlife reserve. Even though this includes animals, Kevin is still displaying intimacy. If he didn't have some sort of strong relationship with these animals, they would eat him! That is if they haven't already ate him and I just missed that video. You can see that the lions have a strong relationship with him in the video just by watching how they act.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kjWBgA81LM
Power. Power comes off as something that is a bad trait/need. It can be bad if someone becomes too concerned with it. However, power can be displayed in a healthy, friendly manor. Take our nations presidents for example, and most recently, Obama. In this video, you will see the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Obama shares his different plans that he has for the United States in this video. People elected him because they are supporters of his ideas and how he wants to run things. Voters of Obama are ok with him being in power, thus being able to influence how people live their lives.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PuHGKnboNY
The last and final need to be shown is affiliation. This video clip is from the film, "Rudy". I feel like this is a great clip for this social need and really does a good job explaining affiliation visually. Rudy wants to be a part of Notre Dames' fighting Irish football team. Rudy wants to belong to something and is willing to work very hard to get there. By making the team, he will be affiliated with the team. Each teammate of his will give him respect and support just because he is part of the team. He is a part of them, a part of the team. Almost could be called part of a brotherhood. Teammates have an unconditional relationship with each other.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4tPpqfdt9Y
For my first clip I chose one related to gangs. The people in this video feel like they are a “family”. They basically don't have a solid home life and are looking for someone to relate with. The need for affiliation is rooted in a fear of interpersonal rejection. People with high-need affiliation interact with others to avoid negative emotions, such as fear of disapproval and loneliness, and typically experience much anxiety in their relationships.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKHlzp-bf3U Gang affiliation.
My next clip relates to Intimacy. This clip has the Comedian Steve Harvey explaining why men can't be friends with women. He relates this back to intimacy with his wife and compares it to other women. The desire or social need for intimacy arises from interpersonal caring and concern, warmth and commitment, emotional connectedness, reciprocal dialogue, congeniality, and love. The need for intimacy expresses itself as a growth-oriented motive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRGqvB_WxBs Steve Harvey and dating.
My third clip is about Darth Vader attempting to get Luke his son to join “the Dark Side”. If you know anything about Star Wars you would know that there is an evil empire attempting to capture all the power in the galaxy. The essence of the need for power is a desire to make the physical and social world conform to one's personal image or plan for it. Vader has plans to take over the galaxy. Such power striving often center around a need for dominance, reputation, status, or position.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siipB-1Zoac Vader
The last clip is about the legendary motivational speaker Tony Robbins on achievement. The need for achievement is the desire to do well relative to a standard of excellence. It motivates people to seek “success in competition with a standard of excellence”. A standard of excellence is any challenge to a person's sense of competence that ends with an objective outcome of success versus failure, win versus lose, or right versus wrong. Tony Robbins exemplifies all of the traits of achievement in this clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TZnimeVXz0 Tony Robbins
When thinking of these four social needs, Disney movies demonstrate each of these in pretty much every movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0AiN8vrn9Y This clip demonstrates power. Scar is the leader of the hyenas and wants more power. We have all seen The Lion King; Scar is Mufasa's younger brother, so he will never be king. Simba will be Mufasa's successor. To become king, Scar has to kill Mufasa and Simba. Scar uses intimidation methods to get the hyenas to do what he wants because he is a lion and they are hyenas; they are lower on the food and social chain that he is. He also promises them that "they will never go hungry again" if he is king. He is bribing them to do his dirty work to achieve power.
The next Disney movie that demonstrates achievement is Mulan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSS5dEeMX64&feature=endscreen&NR=1 One of the most known songs, I'll Make a Man Out of You, shows not only Mulan's progress and achievement, but Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po's as well. In the beginning of the video, all of the soldiers are unable to climb this pole; the start of training. It showed Mulan pretty much failing at everything in the training. Yao has to run across a field while dodging arrows on fire, but he caught on fire. Ling tries to break a cement piece with his head, but does not succeed. Mulan is martial arts fighting again Shang and ends up with a black eye. Chien-Po does not know how to swim so he stops suddenly when crossing on the wood poles in the water. Shang, the leader tells Mulan to go home, because he could not make a man out of her. But she sees the pole and so she worked really hard to reach the achievement of reaching the top. She had some fall backs, she falls on her butt, she slides down, but eventually she reaches the top and throws the arrow down to Shang. This marks the start of achievement for Mulan and the other soldiers. They are able to master everything and succeeded where they have failed in the past.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS8C92Yi7Zo&feature=related The next video shows affiliation, or a lack of affiliation. Ariel from The Little Mermaid has many gadgets from the world above and is fascinated with it. She wants to explore, wants to be with the people, talk to the people, and live the life of the two-legged people. And to satisfy her need of affiliation with the world above, she wants to go and live the life a person. Ariel feels that the people up above would understand her better than her father. Ariel feels that her father, other mermaids and sea creatures do not relate to her and her fascination with the world above.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVxUUotm1P4&feature=endscreen&NR=1 The last social need, intimacy is shown in Aladdin's A Whole New World. Before getting on the magic carpet, Aladdin asks Jasmine if she trusts him and she said yes. Trust is important in an intimate relationship. Aladdin wants to earn her trust and start a warm, close, intimate relationship with Jasmine. Aladdin shows her new things and wants to share the experiences with her. In the end of the video, Aladdin and Jasmine hold hand and she lays her head on his shoulder; a very intimate thing to do.
TERMS: social needs, power, achievement, affiliation, intimacy
The first video I found demonstrates the social need for achievement. The 20 year old student in the video talks about how he learned 11 languages over the course of his life. The first few came out of necessity because his family traveled and it has since become a strong interest. Two or three languages is a lot of some people but even after 11 he still has the need to learn more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55_G66g02QU&feature=g-people&context=G2659c68CPAAAAAAAVAA
The next video I watched demonstrates the need for power. We all know that to some people, status and power is everything. Kanye West seems to be one of those people. During Taylor Swift's acceptance speech he gets on stage, takes the mic, and 'ruins her moment'. He is displaying aggressiveness and a desire for control over the situation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsnv6uYD7LA
The third video I found addresses the social need for intimacy. In this old dating video, men talk about themselves and what they would like in a potential wife. They are trying to establish new interpersonal networks through this dating service.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMQEj4aFOwA&feature=related
Lastly, affiliation is demonstrated in this heart wrenching video of a boy entering the 8th grade who has been a victim of bullying for years. You can tell by his words, his tears, and even the song he played in the background that all he desires is to be a part of a group, have friends, be liked. He shows that he is scared to go back to school for fear of the bullies and being rejected yet again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdkNn3Ei-Lg
Achievement: (both of the following clips are of child prodigy violinists) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv5YpnWNvws
For achievement I actually searched for the clip by looking for videos of child prodigies. Clearly the boy in the film has a high need for achievement as he is in the street playing for an audience and reward. He has achieved a lot to be able to perform in a way that he is playing the violin so well, especially since he probably isn’t even a teen yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEOZ31HeZT4&NR=1&feature=endscreen this second clip is perhaps an even better example as the girl is 7 and performing on a stage and has undoubtedly won awards for her performance. Part of the need for achievement in the case of both violinists is the drive for mastery. Clearly they worked to master their abilities to play their instrument. With the 7 year old girl she works to master that specific piece of music. I’m sure it required great time commitment and incredible amounts of work. The mastery allows them to be successful. With the boy on the street he could measure his achievement in the money that he earns and the 7 year old girl in the applause of the audience (among other reinforcers for both children-perhaps they get a personal high and are intrinsically motivated to act as well). They are able to achieve a lot for their age…they’re very talented.
Intimacy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2i4AjozHag this clip from Sesame Street is so incredibly simple and funny, it’s perfect for this specific psychological need. In the film it has three steps. There’s a little sad blob. Another blob comes into the picture and gives the sad blob a hug. Then the blob that got a hug is happy and no longer sad. This extension of love and affection that blob 2 reached out and gave to blob 1 was an extension of intimacy. When the two blobs hug they showed reciprocal affection that made them both happy. Clearly a warm and fulfilling feeling was shared between the two blobs and it showed a positive relationship that satisfied blob 1 or perhaps both blobs’ need for intimacy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXH_2KVT8uY This video is just funny so I thought I’d throw it in for fun and for your grading benefit…it’s called the hug song. Basically is summarizes the need for intimacy by saying that everyone needs a hug regardless of the person or language. It makes you feel good and accepted. This song says that everyone needs a hug that shows some reciprocal affection between people as they show that they care for one another. It’s cute (gets annoying as it goes on so you only really need to listen for the first little bit)
Power: I found clips that show power by searching for films that involve coaches. Athletic coaches are positions of power and in having such power they tend to have methods of reinforcing this power and reminding their players that they are the boss. There is a psychological need in many of us to get and maintain power. Players on the team all struggle for positions of power and influence. Coaches also hope to be influential and motivating to their players. Remember the Titan’s is a film all about power and power struggles. It is not only between blacks and whites but also between the coach and his players. I could choose multiple clips from the video and they would all show power need in some way. In this speech by Coach Boone he tells them that it is not a democracy and that he is the boss. He tells them what’s fun, what’s funny, what to wear, and that they would follow his dictatorship. That is him showing his power and it leads to an incredible influence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zob1YP4jODA
Affiliation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVUvQZdBn5I this film is all about how to “fit in” when applying for a job. It tells all of the appropriate and good things to do when wanting to have a good interview. People would follow the rules shown in this video because not only do they desire to get the job, but they also want to fit in with the employer and the business that hopefully hiring. It’s important to gain the approval of others and that is why the advice given in this video may be so helpful for someone who really wants to fit in at a new job and gain the approval of their boss and co-workers. It’s important to follow different social norms and rules to get along well with others. This video is an example of how people may watch things or seek advice when trying to learn how to appropriately affiliate themselves with a specific group.

Upon looking through the different clips of youtube I found many examples of the four social needs which include achievement, intimacy, power, and affiliation.
The video I chose to demonstrate power was titled “Punk takes on Gulf War vet and gets humiliated.” This video demonstrated the Gulf War veteran being screamed at and pushed repeatedly by a young man who was obviously the fool in this instance. The veteran didn’t respond to the guy. He just stood there and took this abuse for several minutes. Eventually the Gulf War vet hit the guy with one punch and the guy fell to the ground and crawled away. The reason I chose this video was because the veteran showed true power by having power over himself. I’m sure that right away he wanted to beat the foolish guy to the ground, but he just took the abuse. The veteran risked his life for our country and the people in it, and yet that foolish punk thought he was so tough and so smart that he thought he would pick a fight with this veteran. The veteran maintained control through the entire event, and the people around were influenced for the better.

The video I chose to demonstrate intimacy is called “Bride can’t stop laughing during vows.” While this demonstrated for the couple a funny and quite possibly embarrassing moment, it also demonstrated a very intimate part of their relationship. This was the day they chose to dedicate their lives to each other. This demonstrates the beginning of the most intimate relationship they will ever have in their entire lives.

The video I chose to demonstrate affiliation was titled “This is real friendship.” It demonstrated how one can establish affective relationships. The video showed different people and animals that have developed warm and positive relationships with others. It was a very good video and had some very sweet pictures in it.

The video from youtube that I chose to demonstrate achievement was titled, “Medal of Honor Awarded to Afghanistan Vet.” This video was about Army Sgt. Leroy Petry who picked up a live hand grenade to save others lives. Because of his decision he lost his hand and was shot in both of his legs. He was one of the few men to have received the Medal of Honor and still be alive. Petry demonstrate the highest level of achievement behavior possible for the path he chose with his life. It was clear that he has no regrets and has since then re-enlisted for another term.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7I7iasuIdw&feature=pyv Inspiration: Powerful beyond Measure (How Great are You?)
Throughout this video the social need of achievement is shown, people are constantly pushing themselves to reach maximum ability. Not only the social need achievement but also the psychological need of competence is being displayed. The type of physical activity which is done here is very physical and the feeling of achievement is very high when being able to complete these varied exercises.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdkNn3Ei-Lg What’s Going On…
In this clip Jonah Mowry is struggling to be accepted or so it seems. Throughout the clip note cards are presented and through the words and emotions which I see in the clip I think that the need of intimacy is not being fulfilled. I desire for close relationships is what Jonah is struggling to find while growing up. The peer groups are often where we being this formation of intimacy in school, but often times bullying makes it difficult for this to occur. I also think that through this video we can see the lack of affiliation because he is in need of this positive peer relationship but is often rejected through bullying. I understand the difference between affiliation and intimacy but I feel that they strongly interplay with each other with our social needs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mjRU6b4ecw Love Hurts- 2011 Doritos Pepsi Max Superbowl Commercial Ad- Finalist
Through this commercial there is a demonstration of power in the relationship. Yes, in the textbook it was said power was not normally displayed in a relationship but here I think it is. The woman was very controlling in the decisions which her partner was making but in the end they come to agreement with the Pepsi Max drink. I mean besides the numerous examples of stereotypes presented in the clip, there is still a display of power.

WTF?
Achievement
This video shows Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin receiving an ‘honorary’ award at the 44th Academy Awards ceremony in 1972. Despite a lifetime of critical and popular acclaim, Chaplin had previously been treated disdainfully by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (for his scandalous personal life, his political views, and -- perhaps most of all-- for his early disregard for the Academy). Breaking 20 years of exile (originally imposed by J. Edgar Hoover), Chaplin received the longest standing ovation in Academy history (at 12 minutes). He appears to be genuinely moved by the applause: he is at a loss for words, his eyes tear up, and he seems stunned. As he expresses his thanks, he seems to be very sincere and grateful -- not bitter that the recognition for his achievement is so long overdue. Despite everything, the achievement was still important to him.

Intimacy
In this scene from Good Will Hunting, Sean (Robin Williams) uses self-disclosure to establish a trusting relationship with Will (Matt Damon). We assume that Sean is speaking of his own personal experiences of pain, love, and loss. We recognize that these are not the kind of stories that we would share with just anyone: they are stories of our vulnerabilities, and we only share them with people we trust. Sean speaks of these intimate relationships not just to build rapport with Will, but also to show him what is missing from his life.

Power
This clip from Wall Street shows Gordon Gekko addressing the shareholders of Teldar Paper Co. as he pursues a hostile takeover of the company. Gekko speaks of greed as a virtue, arguing that it is the driving force behind all human achievement. His argument seems to be drawn from Nietzsche’s ‘Will to Power’, a philosophical construct used to explain the ‘universal’ drive to achieve or obtain an ever-more advantageous position.

This video shows a distraught fan at the Clemson vs. Georgia Tech game on 09/10/2009. Like many sports fans, this guy shows a strong emotional entanglement with his team of choice. He is wearing an orange hat and T-shirt, showing his support for the orange and purple of the Clemson Tigers. When his team loses, the boy takes it personally, as though he himself had lost. He hangs his head, holds his head in his hands, throws his hat down, pounds his fists, and sprawls back across the bleachers in despair, as though life has lost all meaning. Being a Clemson supporter is part of his identity: it defines (in part) who he is. Thus he feels a vicarious emotional response to the team’s victories and defeats.

Achievement
This is a silly video about a student receiving an A in his class and making a video about how excited he is to accomplish this. As silly as this example is, getting good grades and achieving your goals in school is a huge part of achievement for most people. We are motivated to keep going and reach higher by achieving our current goals and setting new goals. So even though this video is super silly and mildly inappropriate, it fits into the class because in all seriousness people want to achieve and gain autonomy by reaching their goals and doing well.

Intimacy
In this scene from The Notebook. Allie and and Noah sharing a bonding experience as Noah says "If you're a bird, I'm a bird." I chose a scene from The Notebook because nearly any scene from the movie displays intimacy between Allie and Noah. You can see throughout the whole movie how they need to have a serious, committed, bonded relationship. People often can not get over their first love because love is such an intimate feeling and brings about such a secure relationship between two people.

Power
This this clip the power ranger, need certain superhero powers in order to beat the megazords in battle. I chose to pick something as simple as power rangers because it is interesting to see how people feel they need power, even in cartoons. As humans, we often feel that we need a superhero to save us. Superheros have power and appear to be mighty because we place them on pedestals of power. I wanted to show how children are affected and inspired by powerful people in television shows because it often leads to motivation and inspiration for children to want to become powerful.

Affiliation
This is a clip on sorority and fraternity hazing. I thought this would be the perfect example of affiliation. People put themselves in aversive situations in order to feel a sense of affiliation and being a "part of the group." Some people have a strong need for affiliation and will do anything embarrassing, painful, or disgusting in order to fit in and be apart of the group.
