I read a few entries in the body modification category. The first one I read was Women’s internal fear of gaining weight. I found this to be very interesting because I could relate it to myself. I have noticed that when I see an obese woman I imagine myself at that weight. It is just an automatic thought, I don’t try to think about it but I do. This is because I do have a fear of gaining weight. I have two sisters that have always been able to eat whatever they would like and they stay thin. I on the other hand have to watch what I eat or I will gain weight. I have never been overweight but I have always weighed more than my sisters. I think this is the reason why when I see an obese woman I imagine myself at that weight. When my mother was younger she use to be very skinny, but once she had four kids she gained weight and cannot lose it. This also motivates me to watch what I eat because I know that I have a chance of gaining weight and not being able to lose it like my mother.

The other entry I read was Plastic surgery obsession. In the article she talks about how Heidi Montag has gotten many plastic surgeries. In the entry the writer said that, “Heidi talks about how all she wants is to be perfect inside and out.” I believe that God made us the way we are because he thinks that there is no other way for us to be. I do not believe in plastic surgery to change your appearance. It is a waste of money. I think it is sad that Heidi felt she needed to get plastic surgery so she could be perfect on the outside.

The last entry I will talk about is Family support helps kids lose weight. I completely agree with this article. She talks about a camp that invites parents to the camp. I do believe that the support of your family will help you lose weight. If you don’t have support by people you will not be as motivated to keep trying to lose weight. When you have people around you that believe in you it will help you believe in yourself even more.

I really like your comment about the thought of having to be perfect inside and out...
and what you said about God making "us the way we are because he thinks that there is no other way for us to be." :)

I chose to search the topic of sexuality. One of the most interesting blogs that I viewed was called “Semen…Good for you?” The blog stated semen decreased depression and suicide in women who had unprotected sex. The blog also mentioned that research findings suggest that women who have unprotected sex become more and more depressed the longer they go without sex. The study mentioned in the blog suggested that hormones in semen can cause women to develop physical dependency. I thought the blog was very interesting and made me wonder if semen could actually cause women to develop physical dependency and if so, could it have an evolutionary purpose. For example, could the physical dependency make it more likely that women will have more sex, increasing the chances of a males genes being passed on?
I also read a blog titled “ Kissing = fun.” The article attached to the blog stated that kissing may also serve an evolutionary purpose. The article suggests that kissing sends chemical signals, allowing us to pick a good mate and foster long term relationships; increasing the chances for procreation. The article also stated that kissing reduces stress and promotes bonding. The article made me wonder if kissing also serves to satisfy our need for attachment. The article also offered information on a study of female scent preference. In a study, females were given the shirts worn by men. Females were then asked to choose the shirt that smelt the most appealing to them. The study concluded that females picked the scents of men who had immune systems that were different from their own, again having an evolutionary purpose. After reading the blogs and articles, I am beginning to wonder about other aspects that may also serve the purpose of procreation.

Lying is a natural thing that everyone does and many people lie and don't even realize it, which was a lot about what his article was about. I enjoy this topic because I find very interesting of how people with keep piling lie after a lie to cover their own butt when it comes to certain situations.

In the article, they discussed how people will lie and not even realize. For instance, they did this study when they put two strangers in a room together and had them talk to each other for ten minutes while being videotaped. After the interview, they had the interviewer’s watch their interviews to pick out when they weren’t accurately portraying themselves, but they insisted that they were telling the total truth. Well to their surprise they lied quite often from pretending to like something or someone when they really don’t, to saying they are the star in a rock band.

Also discuss in the article how people are more likely to lie to co-workers than complete strangers. There are many reasons why we lie to them, for one reason we don’t want to offend them that when we disagree on a topic and another reason is that we want to look good with the people we hang out with or care about because we want to protect our self-worth. The researchers set up a scenario about how one co-worker paid more than the other from prices of $200-$2000. So when the other would explain how much they paid, the participants were more likely to lie when the amount was smaller.

I’m really not surprised with these findings because we probably lie more often than we realize in our day to day life.

I enjoyed this article a great deal, and yes, I also fall into the procrastinator category outlined by the author. I tend to be motivated strictly by deadlines and what people tell me to do and then dawdle away potentially productive time in between. Like the author, I tend to use these in-between times to be productive in all the wrong areas. Procrastination often does not mean that a person is not getting anything done; they just tend to be fighting to do everything but what they know they should be doing.

As expected, this discussion relates very well to the motivational concepts we have gone over in class. I believe that one of the most obvious connections to our textbook is the sections about intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. As we learned, a great deal of extrinsic motivation tends to kill innate motivation – this is why college too often boils down to forcing oneself to meet a constant series of deadlines. Many students do not feel inclined to do work on their own timetable because one has already essentially been created for them. If I were better at setting clear and easily attainable goals like our book says, I would likely be much better at finishing my work consistently without having to constantly press up against the time at which it is due. A great way to circumvent my bad habits would be simply to set a regular 2-hour period at the same time each weekday in which I do nothing but write. This is a simple goal, and accomplishing it would mean that I would get a TON of writing done throughout the week BEFORE deadlines approach! This would also dramatically increase my autonomy over the work that is to be done and could help to negate the ill effects of the externally-motivated environment that I otherwise would be working in.
