This is an article that discusses what to do and what to avoid in order to maintain and/or increase motivation in the workplace. Gregory M. Lamb writes about how many employees today feel "trapped" in the workplace because they are not motivated or challenged at work. Contrary to popular belief, employees have reported in a recent study that when it comes to how much they like their jobs salary is not the most important factor. Ranked number 1 on the list was "important work [that] gives a feeling of accomplishment." There is a list of things to do in order to help managers keep the morale of their workers high such as paying according to performance, networking, and praising those who are performing well.

Which of the tip(s) mentioned in the article do you think would be most effective in increasing employee motivation? Can you think of a time where you felt "stuck" in a job--What contributed to that feeling?

I'm really interested in organizational psychology and honestly all the tips listed should be taken into account when managing a business. It's really important for organizational goals and personal goals to be somewhat merged together, otherwise people will feel as though they aren't accomplishing much. However if I had to chose one I would chose "praise those who perform well". Just knowing that someone noticed your good work gives you a sense of achievement. Another big aspect of motivation while at work is the conflict between work and family. One can't be motivated while at work if it causes problems while at home. I can relate to this article somewhat too, I work at Younkers, just one of the stores Bon Ton Corporation owns, and our wages were froze this year. As a college student I was really looking forward to that raise but the store has tried to motivate us in other ways by setting "difficult yet attainable" goals in our sales. The department or person with the most per hour worked got a gift card or something in return for their work.
