SCIENTISTS USE BEES AND WASPS TO SNIFF OUT THE ILLICIT AND THE DANGEROUS - Article

It's the ultimate way to pull off a sting: Teach a group of ordinary honeybees to ignore flowers and, instead, focus on vapors from explosives used in bombs. Then send the bees off in teams to sniff out terrorists. Or track the molecular trail of illicit drugs, or even point police to a rotting corpse.

I thought this was really unique. I had read about it weeks ago but I forgot to write about it. I knew that insects were great "smellers", but I didn't realize how strong their sense of smell actually was. To a first time reader it might seem strange to thing of bees and wasps doing such work, but according to the article they are actually rather easy to train because it is a behavior that is essentially normal to them. And this may seem cruel, but if something were to go wrong in the future, assuming this gets to be a standard method, there would be less sadness over the loss of a bee than a canine. One downfall is their size and speed. They move quickly and it would be relatively hard to track and condition their behaviors. I found the behavior they chose to be rather amusing. Bees naturally stick out their tounges when they expect food. I didn't even think about bees having tongues. Having a natural behavior to work with made it easy to shape. The bees are now trained to stick out there tongues when they smell a certain type of substance. I think this could definitely be the thing of the future.
