Reading Activity Week #2 (Due Monday)

Please read sections 1.3 and 1.4 for this week.

After reading the sections, think of all the terms and concepts used in all of section 1 (1.1, 1.2 and the ones in these two sections).  Please respond to the following questions and try to use these terms and concepts as you respond to the following questions.

Which section did you like the most? Why? Which section did you like the least? Why? What do you think is the most useful piece of information from section 1.3? Why? Most useful from 1.4? Why? What are your thoughts on the use of reinforcement? Why? What are your thoughts on the use of punishment? Why?

Prior to reading these sections, what did you think about behavior modification?  Why? What are three things you will remember from what you read in the sections? Why? How has reading the sections changed what you originally thought about behavior modification? How so?

Finally indicate two topics or concepts that you would like me to cover in more depth in class.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Topical Blog Week #2 (Due Friday)

What I would like you to do is to find a topic from section 1.3 or 1.4 that you were interested in and search the internet for material on that topic. You might, for example, find people who are doing research on the topic, you might find web pages that discuss the topic, you might find youtube clips that demonstrate something related to the topic, etc. What you find and use is pretty much up to you at this point. Please use 3 or more resources.

Once you have completed your search and explorations, I would like you to say what your topic is, how exactly it fits into the chapter, and why you are interested in it. Next, I would like you to take the information you found related to your topic, integrate/synthesize it, and then write about it. At the end, please include working URLs for the three websites. Keep in mind that it will be easier if you keep it to one topic.

By integrating/synthesizing I mean to take what your read/experienced from the internet search (and from chapter 1 if you like) organize the information into the main themes, issues, info, examples, etc. about your topic and then write about the topic in your own words using that information. This is hard for some people to do - many students write what we refer to as "serial abstracts." They are tempted to talk about the websites rather than the topic proper and this what you DON'T want to do! They will talk all about website #1, start a new paragraph and talk all about web site #2, start a new paragraph and talk all about web site #3, and then write some kind of conclusion. Serial means one after the other...again, this what you DON'T want to do! If all three sites are on the same one topic it will be easier.

At first it is a real challenge to get out of the habit of writing "serial abstracts," but I assure you once you get the hang of it it is much easier to write using the integration method. And besides this is the way researchers and scientists write their technical reports and findings - many of you will have to be able to do this for other classes and for jobs that you may eventually be hired for so now is a good time to learn this skill. At this point don't worry about a grade, worry about doing your best to have fun with the topic and then integrate it into your own words to share what you found and now know. We will work on citing the sources later....

Let me know if you have any questions.

Positive Punishment ABCs Example

Groupon Unsubscribe Page

Brief description of clip.

This is a link to an unsubscribe page from a site called Groupon.com. When you click on its unsubscribe page you get a button where you can click on to punish Derrick. Derrick is the guy that subscribed you in the first place.

http://www.groupon.com/new-york/unsubscribed

Breakdown:

A=In the context of an internet company
B=Derrick subscribing people
C=Gets beverage tossed in his face

Getting a beverage tossed in his face is aversive so Derrick will subscribe people less often.
Since "C" involves adding something it is Positive.
Since "B" will decrease it is Punishment.

Therefore this is Positive Punishment.

Analysis: In the context of an internet website where subscribers to the groupon.com can go to unsubscribe to their email service. Once at the site there is a button that says PUNNISH DERRICK. Derrick is presumable the guy that signed you up in the first place.

The button elicits a clicking behavior on my part (although this is not the target behavior I am interest in this example. Once I emit a clicking behavior the video starts with a co-worker possibly a boss of Derrick's approaching and scolding him which is an aversive consequence, and then he throws his beverage (presumably coffee) in Derrick's face.

This is an example of positive punishment because an aversive consequence is added to reduce the unwanted behavior of Derrick's. As a result this should decrease the frequency of Derrick subscribing people to their email list.

Extended notes below....

Week #15 - Token Economy (Due Saturday)

Token Economy - On Tuesday (week #15) we will cover the use of token economies in class. For this post I would like you to develop a token economy to practice what you learned.

What is your setting?
What behavior class are you going to change?
What are the target behaviors you are going to change though reinforcement (Keep in mind the use of DROs)?
What type of token are you going to use?
What are some considerations for the use of these tokens?
What are you going to use for the backup reinforcers?
What was your rationale for choosing these reinforcers?
What is the token value and how did you select that value?
What are you using for a bank and how did you arrive at that decision?
What are the hours of operation for your bank?
Who will you need to explain your program to?
How will you go about explaining your program (what will you actually say)?
What is your plan for reducing the need for tokens to maintain the target behavior?
Looking back at your token economy you have planned, what are some potential problems you should anticipate and plan for?

Let me know if you have any questions,

--Dr. M

What I would like you to do for this homework is to have some fun and find some websites places or organizations that use or tried to use token economies. Please try to incorporate the behavioral terms we are learning into your writing and some material from the lecture on token economies.

1) Please discuss your topic in general, why it interests you (or not) and how it relates to behavior modification.

2) Post at least 2 links to the sites you visited that were most informative about token economies.

3) Discuss how these sites further expanded your understanding of token economies (kind of like a conclusion).

4) Make a list of behavioral terms you used in this post (this is to help get you focused on using behavioral terms in your regular writings).

Thanks.

"With unemployment in the United States hovering around 10%, hunting for jobs can be a daunting endeavor.

Competition can be cutthroat, and job seekers have been using all kinds of unusual strategies to gain an edge in their searches, from donning sandwich boards advertising their skills to passing out resumes on street corners.

While some applicants have used these unorthodox strategies to secure a coveted position, others have used creative brute force, wielding new technology, unusual online outlets, and brand-new content creation tools to set themselves apart."

Please read through the article and enjoy the different portfolios and ask yourself:

Ask yourself for each of the portfolios: What is this person's contribution? How does this person want to be evaluated? How has this person gone about representing themselves?

Pick one of the portfolios you viewed and critique it in regards to the 3 questions above.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Psychology Club

Briefly discuss the meeting. What if anything related to the BMod class?

We have been putting a great deal of work into using the terms and terminology we have learned so far in our posts and comments. For this exercize I would like you to comment on 3 existing posts (or comments) on the class website. Write the terms you used in your response; count the number of terms and then write "the number of terms are...."

Assume that everything on the website relates to behavior modification. In your response discuss the post or comment in behavioral terms from a behavioral perspective.

A good example of what I am talking about can be found at:

http://www.psychologicalscience.com/bmod/2010/02/a-conversation-with-temple-grandin-audio.html#comments

Once you respond to 3 posts or comments go then write:

1) My first response was on the following post or comment and the number of terms is.....

2) My second response was on the following post or comment and the number of terms is.....

3) My third response was on the following post or comment and the number of terms is.....

4) Add the the numbers from 1, 2, and 3 and write the total number of terms is......

Section 4.2 (Due before Tuesday Week #8)

After reading section 4.2 please do the following:

1) Write the class of behavior you are working on for your self-directed behavior project.

2) Decide on 1 behavior you are going to do to help you achieve your goal. This will be the behavior you will be writing down / recording and graphing.

3) Write the behavior as a specific target behavior.

4) State why it is a good target behavior - i.e., how does it fit the requirements of a good target behavior?

5) State how you are going to quantify the behavior - i.e., how are you going to graph the behavior? What will the label on the y-axis of your graph say?

Don't start recording your behavior just yet.

Section 4.1 (Due Friday)

By now you should have read section 4.1 and you should have posted a behavioral class you want to use for your self-directed behavior. If you have not - go back and do this first.

For this post I would like to 1) post the behavioral class you are going to use, and 2) list at least 3 target behaviors you might help  you to achieve your behavioral goal (either reinforce or punish - doens;t matter right now).

Notice in my comment that I haven't given very specific target behaviors - we will go over these again later - for now just put down some behaviors that will help yyou achieve your desired behavior.

When you are done with this section you can read 4.2 which will be due on Tuesday week #8.

Please read the email I sent out before starting this project. If you don't have the email let me know and I'll resend it.

For this assignment simply state what class of behavior you are going to work on for your self-directed behavior project (Recall that we worked on behavioral classes in section 1.5 - go back and review if you need to).

You are not committing yourself to this behavioral class, you can change it later.

When you finish your comment - you can start on the reading sec 4.1 due Friday - http://www.psychologicalscience.com/bmod/2010/02/section-31-due-friday.html

By now you should have several weeks worth of data for your eating food project.

Please provide the following:

2) What was your target behavior?

3) How did you record your eating behavior on a day to day basis?

4) What was your baseline behavior? Was it an increasing or decreasing trend?

5) What was your intervention? Did you use reinforcement if you reached your weekly goal? What did you use as a reinforcer?

6) Was your intervention successful? Did the trend line decrease?

7) What did you think of this project? What was the hardest thing about this project?

8) If you were to do another behavioral project what behavior would you work on?

Remember we are looking for the shaping of a behavior.

Keep these questions in mind when formulating your response. Is there an establishing operation involved? Any discriminative stimulus? What is the context? Who / what is eliciting the behavior? Who is emitting it? Etc.? Was punishment or reinforcment used/ was it positive or negative? What was the previously reinforced behavior? Was there an extinction burst? Was there variability in the  behavior? Spontaneous recovery? etc.

Use these questions when you formulate your video response - don't simply answer each questions.

3) Finally, please make a list of the behavioral terms used in your response.

This is due Saturday.

After reviewing the case on Kitty Genovese (1964) I came across this article on a high school  homecoming gang rape in which 20 people stood by and watched (and/or participated) - in which no one stepped in to help the girl. These kinds of stories are very disturbing, however, they are important in research regarding the psychological aspects that witnesses go through when witnessing a crime. Some psychologists believe this is known as the 'bystander effect'. People become so concerned over what may occur to them (socially and physically) if they were to go to the police and report the crime they witnessed. The idea that "there are more people around, why should I  be the one to help?" is troublesome for investigators and the victim because something should (or could) be done to help, but nobody comes forward at the time of need. This fear of retaliation hinders the investigation process and undermines the whole point of law in these sort of situations. The context of this situation makes me wonder if some sort of "incentive" program be put in place to try and coax witnesses to step forward and help out the police during the initial investigation. But then the question comes to mind - what incentives could there be if the witness were to comply (taking into consideration their life may be in danger if they "tattle")? There are many psychological questions that come into play on these very sensitive subjects.

Behavior Observation - Eating

For the next few weeks as part of the class you will be asked to keep track of the food you are eating. For the first week we will conduct a baseline of the food you are eating. You will probably need to carry a small note pad or something manageable to record eating. It should be something that you can carry around since eating takes place in a variety of settings.

You will need to record the time, date and what you ate. Please try to estimate the number of calories you consumed as well. Do the best you can. Please also note the context (antecedent) of the eating behavior. For example I was at my friends house, we were out having fun, for lunch at school, I was busy with my homework....

Please make the recordings as soon as possible so you don't forget what you ate or forget the circumstances.

We will do this for a week and turn in the baseline recordings this coming Tuesday in class.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the class project,

Week #2 - Video Analysis

For this assignment please find a short video clip online. Based on what we covered in class on Thursday, I would like you to identify the main behavior involved in the video, the antecedents to the behavior, and the consequences of the behavior using the terms and terminology we have learned from the book, class, and other sources. If you can, tell us if it is reinforcement or punishment and what you base that on (why). When you post make sure you 1) first describe the video in regular lay terms, 2) describe it in behavioral terms (ABCs - use as many of the terms we have already learned so far), 3) is it reinforcement or punishment, and 4) Post the url.

Use the numbering when you make your post.

I will provide an example in a comment below....

Web Divergence - Week 1

What I would like you to do for this homework is to have some fun and find some websites of a topic that interests you and post it here as a comment. At this point I am not as concerned with exactly how you compose the actual post for this activity. I am more concerned that you have a meaningful experience searching out and learning about your topic.

Thanks.
