Topical Blog Week #3 (Due Thursday)

Topics in the News?

What I would like you to do is to start applying what we are learning in class to real world matters. Some might ask, "What good is learning psychology if we can't apply it to real world matters?" So that is what we are going to do with this week's topical blog assignment.

What I would like you to do is to either go to NPR (http://www.npr.org/ ), the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/ ) or any news site listed at the bottom of the following page (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ listed in their news sources) and read, watch, or listen to something that is interesting to you and relates to what we have been learning in the class.

For your news I would like you to briefly describe/summarize your piece. 1) Tell us what behavior (target behavior) you are using that illustrates the reinforced or punished behavior (be careful as there are often many behaviors in a video and you need to isolate the behavior of interest). 2) Next tell us what the consequence of the behavior is. 3) Then tell us how, that consequence either will increase or decrease the frequency of the behavior. 4) Tell us if the consequence involves the addition of something or if it involves the removal of something. 5) Finally tell us to the antecedent is.

Please then list the ABC's of the behavior

A=
B=
C=

Now state if this is an example of positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement, negative punishment. Tell us if it involves extinction, establishing operations, use as many terms from the chapters we have already covered as you can.

Now find another behavior in the same news piece and repeat the steps (i.e. do it again).

For originality sake, make sure the videos you are not using the same pieces of news the four other students before you just used.

When you are done, copy and paste the URL at the bottom so we can go and see the sources you used.

Since we are trying to get you to use terms we are learning, please either underline the terms used (prob with a word processer cut & paste) or make a list of terms at the bottom of your post.

Let me know if you have any questions.

In my article, the European Commission is offering $4.32 million dollar prize to a group who comes up with the best idea for developing insects as a popular food to try and convince people to eat more insects as an every day food.
1) The target behavior here is trying to get more people to eat insects such as grasshoppers and crickets
2)The consequence of this behavior is eating healthier because insects are lower in fat, higher in calcium, have good source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and other minerals than meat such as beef or pork.
3)If people do start eating insects in America and realize how healthy it is then it could increase their frequency for eating them, but if people don't like the taste and appearance, then the frequency will decrease.
4)By eating insects, I believe it is an addition to better health. (unless not properly inspected)
5)This is taken place in the UN but I think the idea is migrating to the United States.
A-Restaurants or America someday
B-Eating Insects
C-Being healthier (or getting sick)
I think this is an example of positive reinforcement for those who are trying to eat healthier and looking to experience new foods.
Behavior #2
1)In the video on this article, many farmers target behavior is catching insects to sell the food.
2)The consequence of catching insects is making money to live
3)Obviously this will increase their frequency to continue farming for insects because they need an income to support their families
4)The reward is receiving money and some days the reward is higher
5)Selling their insects at a marketplace
A-Marketplace
B-Catching insects to sell to customers
C-Earning money

I read an article about a jet carrying a Russian hockey team crashing and killing 43 people.
1) The target behavior is the jet carrying the hockey team.
2) The consequence of this behavior is the jet crashing and killing 43 out of 45 people.
3) This consequence will probably decrease the carrying of people on planes because many people will not want to ride these types of jets anymore.
4) This consequence involves the removal of something, since it removed both the jet and peoples' lives.
5) The antecedent is the hockey team needing to travel to another location.

A= hockey team's need to travel
B= traveling
C= crash

This would be an example of negative punishment. It took away those peoples' lives and will decrease the likely that any of those people or their families will travel on jets of that nature again. I could be wrong about this, but I think extinction is involved in this situation. Usually the team would be reinforced by flying to their destination because they'd get to go play a game or come back to see their families. This was not longer a reinforcement obviously because it ended in tragedy. Also, traveling elicited the crashing response which in turn probably elicited some very aversive responses to the jet as well as the team crashing.

1) Another behavior in this news piece is the pulling of bodies from the crash.
2) The consequence is that it saved two people, but also saved the bodies from the wreckage so their families could have closure.
3) The consequence will increase the behavior because if they saw that a few people were still alive and the families were able to get closure by this then they would continue to do it.
4) This consequence added closure to the families who lost loved ones and also added the chance of pulling out somebody who was still alive.
5) The antecedent of this would be the crash.

A= crash
B= pulling bodies from wreckage
C= closure for families, saving 2 people

This would be considered positive reinforcement because it is adding the closure and the saved lives. The crash elicited the response of the rescuers to try and save as many lives as possible, even though it was very few. Although the consequence of this crash was very aversive, there was still a chance that people could be saved and closure was provided to the families as well.

Part 1--This news article and video is pretty brief, and pretty simple, yet I believe it definitely relates to what we have been learning in class. A women at the National Buffalo Wing contest just won a chicken wing eating contest, by eating 183 chicken wings in 12 minutes (CRAZY!) (There is a video and another news article, I found them both while searching)
1) The target behavior in the article would emitting a chicken wing eating behavior. To me, this target behavior seems aversive, but the women obviously did not see it as being aversive.
2) The consequence emitting the eating behavior was eliciting praise as well as winning $1,500!
3) I believe that the consequence will influence the behavior to increase, which would mean positive reinforcement was used. The women got praise and money out of her eating behavior, so receiving these positive valences will reinforce her to eat more wings and be in more contests.
4) The consequence involves an addition of something, considering she received money for her eating behavior.
5) The antecedent would be the National Buffalo Wing Contest
A: National Buffalo Wing Contest
B: Eating Buffalo Wings
C: Receiving money
-This would involve positive reinforcement since the women is gaining a reward.
-I think that this situation could possibly be related to extinction in the future. After a while, eating that many chicken wings will not be positively reinforced like it once was. Soon she will not want to eat that many wings, and will not receive money or praise for it. Sometimes emitting certain behaviors get old after a while, and sometimes it turns to punishment.

Part 2--
1) If you watch the video, another target behavior would be emitting a drinking behavior of liquids (water, juice)
2) The consequence of emitting a drinking behavior would be that your mouth is cooled and not so hot. This would be a positive reinforcement because you are receiving something, and it will increase the behavior.
3) The consequence would increase the behavior. If you just ate 150 chicken wings your mouth is going to be super hot, which means you will want your mouth cooled down.
4) The consequence would be an addition to something, since the individuals in the contest are emitting a drinking behavior, and receiving more water.
5) The antecedent would be eating chicken wings.

A: Eating Chicken Wings
B: Drinking water
C: Mouth is now cooled down
-I think that this would be an example of positive reinforcement, because you are receiving water, which makes the contestants feel good. If your mouth is hot, then you will emit a drinking behavior until satiation.
-I think that satiation could definitely be used in this scenario considering after drinking enough water, you will be full and you will not want to drink anymore water. Also, after you have emitted the drinking behavior, you will have a positive valance.

Terms used: target behavior, emitting, positive reinforcement, satiation, positive valance, antecedent, consequence, punishment, extinction, reinforced, aversive, elicit

The news story I emitted a behavior of reading concerned the US Postal Service, and methods it could implement to reinvent itself. The postal service has suffered net losses of $20 billion over the last 3 years as mailing service usage has declined 20%. The postal service will default on its employee pension on September 30, and only have enough money to operate for the first week of October.

1)One of the methods suggested by Postmaster General Donohoe was emitting a target behavior of ending Saturday mail delivery. Lack of funding has elicited a need for a scaling back behavior on money spent throughout the Postal Service.
2) The consequence of eliminating Saturday delivery is avoiding the termination of US Postal Service operations. An intended response of this measure could be saving $3 billion a year.
3)The consequence of saving $3 billion a year, and remaining in operation will decrease the frequency of Saturday delivery behavior occurring, thus increasing the likelihood of the terminating Saturday delivery.
4)The consequence of saving $3 billion and remaining in business, involves the addition of something.
5)The antecedent is the Postal Service lacking funds to operate.

A= USPS lacking funds to operate
B= eliminating Saturday delivery
C= saving money and remaining in operation

This is an example of positive reinforcement because the addition of money to the USPS bank account increases the frequency of Saturday mail delivery being terminated.
The fact that the postal service has emitted a behavior of being low on funds is an establishing operation for the increase of money to the postal service to be more reinforcing.

1)Donohoe emitted a behavior of suggesting another method to save the post office money and remain operational. He suggests individual post offices emit a target behavior of pre-loading delivery trucks and making sure they are fully stocked (currently not a requirement).
2) The consequence of emitting pre-loading and fully-stocking behaviors is getting carriers on route sooner and delivering more mail per day.
3)Emitting behaviors of being on route sooner and getting more mail delivered per day will increase the behavior of pre-loading and fully-stocking postal vehicles. If money is spent more efficiently (less is wasted), the USPS will have more money and be able to remain in operation longer.
4)The consequence involves the addition of more time on route, thus more mail delivered per day.
5)The antecedent is the US Postal Service lacking funds to continue operation.
A= USPS lacking funds to operate
B= pre-loading and fully-stocking postal vehicles
C= carriers on route sooner and more mail delivered per day

This is an example of positive reinforcement because the addition of time on route and mail delivered per day increases the frequency of pre-loading and fully-stocking vehicle behavior. As a response to employees emitting time-efficient behavior (decreasing money-wasting behavior), the USPS will have more money to use for operation.
The postal service has emitted a behavior of being low on funds, an establishing operation for the increase of money to the USPS to be more reinforcing.

For my news piece I chose an article about a man, Oscar Pistorius, from South Africa that wants to compete in the Olympics and Paralympics. He has two prosthetic legs and was only cleared to run against able-bodied athletes in the year 2008. I found this article very interesting because I highly enjoy running and sprinting is something he and I are both interested in.

1. The target behavior I am looking at in this article is earning a medal at the Olympics. 2. The consequence of earning a medal is reaching his goals. 3. The consequence of earning a medal will increase the behavior of earning a medal because he will have more confidence the next time he runs a race to compete for a medal. 5. The consequence involves the addition of medals to his collection. 6. The antecedent of earning a medal is running the race.
A=Running the race
B=Winning a medal
C=Lots of fame and money and confidence! 
This is an example of positive reinforcement because after he wins a medal he is more likely to try again and even possibly harder. He has to emit running behavior to try to win a medal. Even though the training might be aversive it will be worth it in the end. The response to his success could make other people will prosthetic legs want to achieve their goals and dreams.

1. The next target behavior I am going to look at is Pistorius wanting to run in more races. 2. The consequence of the behavior is more training. 3. The consequence of training will increase the frequency of races he can be in because he will be more prepared for it. 4. The training involves the addition of training. 5. The antecedent is the goal to be a well known Olympian.
A=Be a well known Olympian
B=Run more races
C=More training
This is an example of positive punishment. He is going to do some very aversive training that will not be fun for him to do but hopefully in the end he will become closer to his goal. He is going to have to emit the behavior of working out on a very scheduled basis. Right now Oscar is feeling some deprivation because he hasn’t reached all of his goals he wants to.

Terms: target behavior, consequence, antecedent, aversive, emit, response, positive reinforcement, positive punishment, deprivation

The article I chose was about Linn State now requiring drug tests for all of their college students. The best example of the behavior being punished is the usage of drugs. The consequence of people using drugs is the fact that they have to have drug tests for students now because it became a problem. By testing people for drugs, the behavior of doing drugs is likely to decrease because the students are now aware that they will be caught if they chose to involve themselves with drugs, and they may not get to go to Linn State if they chose to do so. In order to decrease the usage of these drugs, they are adding something, which in this case is drug testing. The antecedent to the behavior of doing drugs is that not enough policies were in effect to keep students from using drugs.

A= Lack of policies against drugs
B= Students use drugs
C= Drug testing is now required at Linn State

Because this punishment involves the addition of something, it is better known as “positive punishment.”

Another example of a behavior in this news piece is that Linn State created the drug testing policy. The consequence of the drug tests is that less students will use drugs in the future. Because the results of drug testing are that less students will use drugs, drug testing will probably increase in the future because of the desirable results. In this case, the consequence involves the removal of something, which would be the removal of students doing drugs. The antecedent to the behavior of adding the policy of drug tests would be that too many students are using drugs.

A= Too many students using drugs
B= Drug testing is required
C= Less students will use drugs

This type of punishment is also known as “positive punishment.”

1---This news article is called, “Under Suspicion At The Mall Of America”. A man had been videotaping the Mall of America, so police were suspicious. The man said he is sending the tape home to his wife in Vietnam. Another man, born in Pakistan but a US citizen, was a suspect because he left his phone in the food court near a cooler and stroller. The man came back to get the phone, he was interrogated and asked if he had friends from Afghanistan. The mall has over 100,000 people in a typical day, which also makes it a threat for the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9/11. This has caused unsettling feelings with some people. They feel this is too strict and unreasonable.

The target behavior would be the man videotaping while walking in the Mall of America. The consequence of this behavior is taking away the video, erasing it, and now the man is a suspect. This will decrease the behavior of this happening again. The antecedent would be at a crowded place, close to a terrorist attack anniversary.

A= at a crowded mall, with the time being near September 11th anniversary
B= a man videotapes people walking in the mall
C= the man is a suspect and is under investigation. The video is taken away.

This would be an example of negative punishment. The video is taken away and the behavior will be decreased because of the aversive consequence. The videotaping behavior elicited a suspicious response.

Terms used: target behavior, consequence, antecedent, negative punishment, aversive, elicited, response.

2---The second target behavior would be the man leaving the cell phone in the food court at the Mall of America. The consequence is the being interrogated and a suspect. This would decrease the behavior of leaving a phone somewhere. The antecedent would be the same, at a crowded place, close to a terrorist attack anniversary.

A= (same) at a crowded mall, with the time being near September 11th anniversary
B= a man leaves his cell phone at the Mall of America near a stroller and cooler
C= the man is interrogated and a suspect

This would be an example of punishment, because it decreases the behavior. However, the person is only interrogated so I am not sure if that is positive or negative. The consequence definitely is aversive.

Terms: antecedent, consequence, target behavior, aversive

http://www.npr.org/2011/09/07/140234451/under-suspicion-at-the-mall-of-america

My news article was about a man who tried to sell important information about U.S. security secrets to Israel. He was caught by an undercover FBI agent that was posing as a member of Mossad. He pleaded guilty to one count of espionage and is facing 13 years in jail, under a plea agreement made with the prosecutors. If he had not taken the plea agreement, he would have faced the death penalty.

1. The target behavior is getting Nozette (the man charged) to stop trying to sell U.S. government secrets.
2. The consequence is that he will be put in jail.
3. This consequence should decrease the frequency of the behavior.
4. The consequence involves the removal of his freedom.
5. The antecedent was talking with Nozette.

A = talking with Nozette.
B = Nozette agrees to sell government information.
C = Nozette goes to jail for a long time.

This is an example of negative punishment, because it is the removal of his freedom that is supposed to decrease this type of activity in the future. Putting Nozette in jail is supposed to elicit a disgust behavior, which will make him emit a feeling of remorse and guilt. This punishment should involve extinction in that he will not engage in this behavior again. The establishing operation could be that he really wanted the money that he thought he would be paid (and that he was given). The discriminating stimulus could be the undercover FBI agent approaching him about making a deal if that’s what happened.

1. Another target behavior could be the prosecutor trying to get Nozette to plead guilty by giving him a reduced charge and a reduced sentence.
2. The consequence is that the government doesn’t have to pay for a trial.
3. The consequence should increase the times a prosecutor will try to make a deal.
4. The antecedent was Nozette being charged.

A = Nozette was caught
B = Prosecutor gets Nozette to take a plea deal
C = Government saves money on trial

This could be an example of positive or negative reinforcement. Positive because it adds a deal where none existed before, negative because it takes away the need for a trial. It’s reinforcement because it increases the likelihood that the prosecutor will try to make more deals in the future. Since I’ve been saying that the consequence is no trial, I’m going with negative reinforcement. The prosecutor could have elicited a talking behavior about the deal to Nozette, who emitted an approval behavior back to the prosecutor. Because of this, the deal was able to be made. The discriminative stimulus in this case would be the deal because the prosecutor didn’t have to make it and Nozette didn’t have to take it. An establishing operation would be that Nozette didn’t want to face the death penalty. Nozette’s response is to take the deal being offered.

Terms: positive, negative, reinforcement, punishment, establishing operation, target behavior, elicit, emit, consequence, antecedent, discriminating stimulus, response, behavior, decrease, increase, extinction.

Five Uruguayan peacekeepers allegedly raped an 18-year-old Haitian man at the UN base in Haiti. This instance has elicited widespread outrage in Haiti and protests outside of the UN base. The five Uruguayan marines will be punished in the full extent of the law in the form of increased security and will eventually be replaced by a Haitian force.

The target behavior is the Uruguayan marines raping the Haitian man
Consequence of target behavior is eventually being replaced
How consequence will increase/decrease behavior: consequence will decrease the behavior because they are essentially losing respect and their position as a peacekeeper
Consequence takes away their position as a peacekeeper
Antecedent: being at the UN base

A: being stationed at the UN base in Haiti elicited the behavior
B: emitting the behavior of raping an innocent Haitian man
C: losing their position as a peacekeeper

This consequence is an example of Negative Punishment.

TERMS USED: target behavior, elicited, emitting, negative punishment, consequence, punishment

#2

Since the behavior emitted by the 18-year-old is unclear I'm going to infer that the behavior he emitted was trusting the marines.
Target behavior #2 is the 18-year-old man trusting the five Uruguayan marines
The consequence of trusting the Uruguayan marines is getting raped
This consequence will probably decrease the likelihood of him trusting Uruguayan marines in the future.
The consequence presented the Haitian man with unwanted sexual advances.
The antecedent was being in the presence of the Uruguayan marines in the UN base.

A: being in the presence of the five marines in the UN base
B: trusting the marines
C: getting sexually assaulted by the marines

This is an example of Positive Punishment.

TERMS USED: emitted, target behavior, consequence, antecedent, positive punishment

This news story from BBC is about Somali Pirates who have recently let a Danish family and two members of the crew go free after being held since February. They were all said to have been in good condition, in spite of their ordeal, and would soon be back home. A ransom of $3 million was paid for their release.
The target behavior that I would like to take a look at in this report is pirating a boat. According to this report the consequence for their behavior was to get away scot free and with $3 million in their pocket. What an amazing positive reinforcer! As a result of this consequence the behavior will likely continue into the future and will increase in its frequency. The consequence in this example involved the addition of $3 million to the pirates. The antecedent in this case is pretty complex. Somalia is a very poor country, and thus acts as an establishing operation, making the chance to make money a very enticing reinforcer. The extreme poverty in the country has elicited illegal behavior, such as pirating, in the residents of the country. The Somali’s in turn emit the behavior of piracy. That then brings them to the antecedent that got them the family and crew which would be having a heavily armed boat going against an unarmed family.
A= Opportunity to pirate a ship, extreme poverty
B= Pirating the ship
C= Being paid $3 million ransom money + 1 boat
Another possible behavior to look at in this article is that there was an attempt back in March to rescue the hostages from the pirates. A group of soldiers from a region in Somalia attempted to board the ship and to rescue the hostages. The result from this was the death of several of the soldiers and the hostages were not saved.
The target behavior to look at here would be attempting to rescue hostages from a pirated ship. According to this report the consequence was the death of several of the soldiers in the brave attempt. The consequences of the death of several soldiers at the hands of a rag-tag pirate company will certainly decrease the frequency of the saving behavior. The consequence in this case would be a negative punishment because it resulted in the deaths of soldiers; the removal of life was the consequence. The antecedent here was that the Somali government is under immense pressure to take care of the pirating problem off their coasts. When a Danish family, who was simply traveling around the world on their yacht, is kidnapped and their ship pirated it calls for immediate action; the hostages were taken and the soldiers response was to attempt to save them. In short the antecedent was that there were hostages that had been taken.
A= Hostages had been taken by pirates
B= Attempt to rescue the hostages
C= Several soldiers killed in the process and the hostages were not rescued

Terms: target behavior, reinforcement, reinforcer, elicit, emit, establishing operation, response, antecedent, consequence, negative punishment?, positive reinforcement

This article is about a study that shows how moderate alcohol consumption is related to an increased, as well as healthier life among white women. It looks at how much alcohol is needed to produce these health benefits, and how often they should be consumed. It also looks at specific consequences that are related to drinking.
1.) The target behavior is drinking alcohol in moderate amounts.
2.) The consequence of the behavior is an increase in healthy behavior such as: reducing inflammation, healthy cholesterol levels, improving insulin resistance, and helping blood vessels function properly.
3.) The consequence will ideally increase the frequency of drinking alcohol in moderate amounts.
4.) The consequence involves the addition of something.
5.) Being a (in this study) white woman concerned about her health is the antecedent.
A= white woman concerned about her health
B= drinking alcohol in moderate amounts
C= increased risk for healthy behavior
This is an example of positive reinforcement because you are adding alcohol in moderate amounts to increase healthy behavior.
1.) The target behavior is a healthy lifestyle (physically active and healthy body weight)
2.) The consequence of the behavior is an increase in health as you age.
3.) The consequence of the behavior will likely increase the frequency of living a healthy lifestyle.
4.) The consequence involves the addition of something.
5.) Being a woman concerned about her health is the antecedent.
A= woman concerned about health
B= healthy lifestyle choices
C= increased health as you age
This is an example of positive reinforcement because you are adding healthy behaviors to increase the likelihood of increased health as you age.

The article I read was about Monique Exum, a woman from the Bronx, finding her roommate dead in the apartment. This elicited the response of stuffing her roommate (the operant behavior), John Davis, into a suitcase and to leave it outside an abandoned home.
1) The target behavior Exum emitted was that of stuffing her dead roommate into a suitcase.
2) The consequence of the behavior emitted by Exum was her being arrested.
3) The consequence will decrease the frequency of the behavior because she was arrested for it.
4) The consequence involves the addition of something (jail time).
5) The antecedent was having a dead roommate in her apartment.
A: Dead roommate in the apartment
B: Stuffing the dead roommate into a suitcase
C: Being arrested for improper body removal
This would be an example of positive punishment. Because Exum elicited the incorrect operant behavior and responded by stuffing the roommate into the suitcase rather than emitting the behavior of calling the police, so her consequence was being arrested. I believe that this is positive punishment because she now has to serve time in jail and I do not think that she will ever emit such a behavior again.

Another behavior found in this piece was a person called 911 in response to a strange suitcase sitting outside of the house.
1) The target behavior the person emitted was calling 911.
2) The consequence of the behavior was the police came.
3) The consequence will increase the frequency of the behavior because the person was correct in calling 911.
4) The consequence involves the addition of something (the police coming).
5) The antecedent was the suitcase sitting outside of the house.
A: Strange suitcase sitting outside of a house.
B: A person called 911.
C: The police came.
This would be an example of positive reinforcement because after the operant behavior of calling the police was emitted, the elicited response from the police was to check out the situation. I believe that this will increase the frequency of the target behavior because the person was correct and enjoyed that feeling.

Terms: antecedent, behavior, consequence, reinforcement, punishment, elicit, emit, response, target behavior, operant behavior

This story is about a lady and her two autistic sons who one day go to McDonalds to get happy meals. Because of the young boy’s disabilities, they have a service dog. They are at the restaurant for almost an hour and upon leaving, an off duty manager for the restaurant confront the mother saying that she cannot have the dog in there if one of her sons isn’t blind. This caused both ladies to become upset and shortly after the manager of McDonalds chased the mother down in the parking lot and assaulted her.

1) The behavior I am using is the store manager hitting the mother. 2) The consequence of this behavior is that the store manager got fired and is being taken to court for battery. 3) This consequence should decrease the frequency of the behavior. 4) The behavior involves the removal of her job from the restaurant. 5) The antecedent is the manager getting upset that the mother has a service dog in the store.

A= Manager gets upset that the mother has a service dog in the store
B=The store manager assaults the mother
C=The store manager got fired and is being taken to court for battery.

This is an example of negative punishment

This story involves a very aversive behavior. The manager’s operant behavior set the occasion for her to get punished. In this situation the target behavior would be to decrease the frequency of the manager emitting harmful acts to customers when she becomes upset.

1) The behavior I picked is the mother going to the media to tell her story. 2) The consequence of this behavior is that the public is now aware of what happened to her that day she went to McDonalds. 3) The consequence would probably increase the frequency of the behavior because she is getting publicity. 4) The consequence involves the addition of attention to the mother. The antecedent would be that the mother is looking to get her story out there.

A= The mother want people in the public to be aware of what happened.
B= The mother going to the media to tell her story
C= The public is now aware of what happened that day at McDonalds

This is an example of positive reinforcement. Because she went to the media about her story she is more than likely getting sympathy from the public which would be positive reinforcement.

The mother having the dog in the store elicited a reaction behavior in the manager. She then emitted a physical contact behavior to the mother. The response of the mother was then to turn to the media so she could let her story be heard. Most people will see the operant behavior of the manager as aversive and she will most likely receive negative punishment from her peers.

I chose an article from the Huffington Post website. The article was about Linn State Technical College in central Missouri demanding drug tests for their students. The school stressed on the drug “screening” because the coursework includes dangerous tasks and the school wants the students to be prepared because they will be faced with working in a drug-free workplace after their schooling. The article mainly talks about why the school chose to make drug testing a requirement, however the article also states many reasons of why it violates rights and the school needs to be cautious.

1.The target behavior is drug testing the students at Linn State Techincal College before starting their classes in the fall. This target behavior is positive punishment according to the representatives at Linn State Technical College.

2. The consequence of the behavior is that students will be able to start their coursework and be enrolled in the college.

3.The consequence will decrease the behavior of using drugs, so the students can go to Linn State Technical College and not fail the drug screening.

4.The scenario consequence results in the addition of being a student at LSTC.

5. The antecedent in this article is the enrollment into the Linn State Technical College.

A- Going to LSTC
B- Taking a drug test
C- Becoming a student at LSTC

This example is positive punishment, because it involves in the decrease of students using drugs to be a student at LSTC, which will result in the students being prepared for their future drug-free workplace. Also, this article involves in using an aversive view to many people due to an individuals rights. I think the situation of drug testing at this college will eventually cause an extinction because many people do not like that they do not have a “choice” or the “right” if they want to refuse in taking the drug test. The extinction could lead to the college shutting down due to legal rights, or a decrease in the student enrollment.

**Behavior #2

1.The target behavior is paying $50 for the drug test and testing positive and facing a follow-up test. This target behavior is negative punishment because it decreases the behavior of doing the drugs, but also is negative because of the punishment and the students have to pay money.

2.The consequence of the behavior is being on probation for the rest of the semester and put on their record.

3.The consequence of the behavior will decrease the students drug use and decrease their chances of having a good record because of the failed drug test.

4.The consequence involves the removal having a clean record and a removal of rights.

5.The antecedent is the drug test itself.

A- Drug Test
B- Paying money for taking drug test and testing positive
C-Probation for a semester going on school student record

This is an example of negative punishment because the student will have probation on their school records, and this will affect their future career options, and decrease their individual rights. This situation involves emitting an aversive behavior, because the student may be a good student, but is punished by being put on probation. I also believe that satiation could be used in this scenario because if the student keeps testing positive it will result in the student being kicked out of school or leaving the school and giving up.

My video comes from the BBC about the latest smallest car available for roadways.
1. The behavior I am using is this couple making the smallest car in the world.
2. The car is better for the environment and saves on gas prices.
3. This will increase the frequency of building more smaller and environmental cars.
4. The consequence involves the addition of another car into the world that is better.
5. The antecedent is the man building the car for a better environment.
A. The couple saw a need for a small efficient car.
B. the couple building the car
C. Cheaper gas and better for the world car
This is negative reinforcement because we are reducing the dangerous carbon dioxide from the air.

1. Another behavior is people buying the car for driving.
2. Less money spent of gas and a better conscious
3. It will increase the behavior of buying small cars thanks to saving the money on gas
4. It involves the addition of more money in your pocket.
5. Rising gas prices
A. rising gas prices
B. Buying a small car
C. More money in pocket that could stimulate economy
This is negative reinforcement because emitting the behavior of buying a car is reinforced with more money which is a desirable consequence.

Terms: Negative reinforcement, reinforced, emitted, consequence, desirable,

The article I read was about a yearlong drought that caused a blazing fire in Texas, destroying over 7,000 acres. 1,200 firefighters were there to elicit the situation.
1) The target behavior is the fire.
2) The consequence is the firefighters terminating the fire.
3) The consequence will hopefully increase the frequency of the behavior because their job is to stop the fire.
4) The consequence involves the removal of something. (The fire stopping)
5) The antecedent is the yearlong drought.
A: Yearlong drought making a dry spell
B: Fire fighters came
C: They stopped the fire
This would be an example of positive reinforcement because the firefighters are glad that not many people were hurt and that they were able to emit to their jobs successfully.

Another behavior that I found was that the winds were helping the firefighters take control of the fire.
1) The target behavior was the firefighters taking control of lower winds.
2) The consequence was that they were able to stop the fire easier.
3) The consequence will not increase or decrease the frequency of the behavior because it all depends on how the weather is during the fire.
4) The consequence involves the removal of something. (The fire stopping)
5) The antecedent is the low winds.
A: Low winds
B: Fire fighters being able to work with the winds
C: Stop the fire
This would be an example of positive reinforcement because it was easy for them to terminate the fire.

The article that elicited a reading behavior from me was called “England riots: the feast of fools?” This article was riots and looting that happened in England which sparked a discussion amongst government officials about the effectiveness of their justice system.

1) The target behavior in my article is looting.
2) The consequence of the behavior is getting free stuff.
3) The consequence is desirable because most people like free stuff so it will increase the behavior.
4) The consequence involves the addition of free stuff.
5) The antecedent is social unrest.

A=Social unrest
B=Looting
C=Get free stuff

This is an example of positive reinforcement. This behavior involves establishing operations because the fewer resources a person has will make the reinforcer i.e. getting free stuff more reinforcing. This behavior could also involve extinction in the case that a person emits the looting behavior and does not want the merchandise inside therefore no longer being reinforced by getting free stuff.

1) Another target behavior is scholars arguing about the effectiveness of the penal system.
2) The consequence of this behavior is insecurity towards the effectiveness of the penal system.
3) The consequence will decrease the behavior because insecurity towards the effectiveness of the penal system is an aversive feeling.
4) The consequence of the behavior involves the removal of faith in the penal system.
5) The antecedent is increased rioting and looting.

A=Increased rioting and looting
B=Arguing about the penal system
C=Insecurity towards the penal system

This is an example of negative punishment. It involves extinction because emitting the behavior of arguing about the penal system will not always cause feelings of insecurity so the behavior will not always be punished.

Terms: target behavior, elicited, consequence, behavior, desirable, antecedent, positive reinforcement, reinforce, establishing operations, extinction, emits, reinforce, aversive, punished, and negative punishment.

How to get rid of Roaches: 8 odd ways. The author was having a roach problem due to another building being torn down in the nationhood (this sounds as if this is in a major metropolitan area).

1) The Target behavior of the article would be the writer emitting a roach killing behavior while trying to reinforce the theory of “natural” roach killing aids.
2) The consequence of trying out different roach killers is either they die or they don’t.
3) The positive consequence would be that of dead roaches. The negative consequence would be where there were roaches still alive. Therefore the consequence of emitting a failing roach killing effort will decrease the frequency of said roach killing effort where as emitting a successful roach killing effort will increase the frequency of the successful effort.
4) The consequence would be the removal or death of the roaches since they are the aversive factor in the equation thus this would be positive reinforcement showing what natural roach killers really work.
5) The antecedent is in the writer’s apartment.

A= In the Apartment
B=Trying different roach killers
C=Either dead roaches or not dead roaches

This is positive reinforcement. The failure of most of the trials shows that the few that actually worked will be used again and the ones that failed will not be used again. I believe this is an example of extinction because the ones that did not work will not be used again.

1) The target behavior would be the writer trying to get an exterminator to come over.
2) The consequence of the behavior would be an exterminator coming over or not.
3) The consequence of an exterminator coming over would be positive because he would get rid of the pest problem.
4) The consequence would involve the removal of the roaches.
5) The antecedent is the appearance of roaches.

A=the appearance of roaches
B=calling the exterminator
C=exterminator is booked up and can not come over

I think this is negative punishment due to the fact the exterminator could not come over therefore decreasing the likely hood of the writer calling the exterminator again and just handling it himself.

Terms: Target behavior, emitting, behavior, consequence, positive consequence, frequency, antecedent, extinction.

In my article titled, “John Galliano found guilty of anti-Semitic Paris rants” the topic of discussion is the fact that a very famous fashion designer made a wide variety of racist slurs while at a museum in Paris, France. Instead of receiving the possible sentence of six months in jail, he is required to experience the punishment of a suspended fine equivalent to $8,400 U.S. dollars.

1) The target behavior in this news article is Galliano making the racist comments.
2) The consequence that he will endure will be the positive punishment of being issued a fine. He avoided the negative punishment of giving up his freedom by getting around a jail sentence.
3) This consequence should decrease the undesirable behavior he emitted.
4) The addition of the fine is a positive punishment because the fine was given to him. In another light, the fine could be a negative punishment because the $8,400 will be taken from him.
5) Being in a French museum with a Jewish guide would be the antecedent for his behavior.

A= Being at the museum
B= Making a racial slur
C= The fine he must pay

This article is an example of both negative and positive punishment depending on which perspective you look at the article with.

Within this same article, the famous designer blames his actions on the fact that he is addicted to pills and alcohol. He states that he is now seeking help at a rehabilitation center.

1) The target behavior is the consumption of drugs and alcohol
2) The consequence is that he was sent to rehab
3) By being sent to rehab, the poor behavior should be extinguished (he was previously positively reinforced by what he saw as desirable feelings after taking the drugs)
4) Rehab would be a negative punishment because his freedom to use drugs and alcohol are being removed.
5) The “mounting pressure at work” is the antecedent

A= Pressure in the workplace
B= Drinking and using drugs
C= Being sent to rehab

This portion of the article is an example of negative punishment.

The target behavior is fighting the rebels in Libya. The consequence of this behavior is more than likely death. This will definitely decrease the likely hood of someone continuing or starting this behavior in Libya. This consequence involves the removal of life and the antecedent in this case is Gadhafi’s crazy speech that was televised.
A= Gadhafi’s Speech
B= Fight the Libyan rebels
C= Death
This is an example negative reinforcement because its reinforcing the behavior but it also takes away something. This is an aversive effect and probably would have no effect on people except that the establishing operations have set their minds this ideal.
2.) The target behavior this time is Gadhafi giving a speech. The consequence of him giving a speech is rallying people to his cause. This consequence will definitely cause him to increase the frequency of his speeches. This consequence involves the addition of support to Gadhafi. The antecedent of Gadfahi giving this speech was people believing he had fled the country.
A= Rumors Gadhafi had fled Libya
B= Giving a speech to rally people to him and deny the rumor
C= people may support and fight with him
This is an example of positive reinforcement because the speech is a stimulus to cause a reaction even though this speech may just be a part of the extinction of previous behaviors, such as ruling a country.
Terms: positive reinforcement, aversive, stimulus, establishing operations, extinction

The article I chose to read was about Japan’s lack of natural sources and heavy reliance on nuclear power. Since the nuclear accident in March happened, now 70 percent of Japan wants to phase out atomic energy. Japan’s legislature recently passed a bill to subsidize wind and solar power; they are now requiring that power companies buy wind and solar energy at inflated prices. Japan’s citizens, especially farmers, are frightened and mad about the accident and are helping encourage wind and solar energy use by protesting the usage of nuclear power.
1) The target behavior is China’s government trying to get power companies to invest.
2) If these companies don’t start relying on solar and wind power instead of nuclear power, radiation leakage will continue and fear and panic of the citizens will increase.
3) The fear of another nuclear accident and of leaking radiation alone is enough to make sure that power companies start switching over.
4) The consequence is adding aversive reactions.
5) The antecedent is living in Japan and having the option of relying on wind and solar power or nuclear power.
A= Choosing wind and solar power or nuclear power as your energy source
B= Staying with nuclear power
C= Mass chaos and panic of Japan’s people

In this example, if Japan’s power companies and citizens don’t begin to use wind and solar energy, negative punishment will be the consequence. Japan’s government is being a discriminative stimulus toward Japan’s power companies converting to wind and solar power. Japan’s power companies decision to convert powers are the operating behaviors in whether Japan responds in a relaxed manner or continues to panic about the harsh consequences of nuclear power.

1) The next target behavior I am going to focus on is Japan’s farmers and their outrage. After the nuclear accident occurred, many farmlands were destroyed. Farmers are now protesting at the Tokyo Electric Power Company. They want the country of Japan to lessen its dependence on nuclear power.
2) Hopefully the consequence of the farmer’s protest will be the lessening of nuclear power usage.
3) The farmers’ protests will decrease the frequency of Japan using nuclear power.
4) The consequence involves the removal of nuclear power usage.
5) The antecedent is the farmers protesting outside of the Companies’ headquarters.
A= Outside the Tokyo Electric Power Company
B= Farmers protest nuclear power usage
C= Japan as a country lessens the use of nuclear power

This case is an example of negative reinforcement. By the farmers eliciting the behavior of protesting, they will be reinforced by Japan emitting the behavior of decreasing their nuclear power use. If Japan is more careful with their power usage, Japan’s citizens will have a much more pleasant response. Japan’s nuclear accident was a discriminative stimulus to aversive reactions from its citizens. If they can increase the behaviors of power companies to wind and solar power, Japan will not only be a happier place but a safer place to live as well.

Terms used: consequence, punishment, response, aversive, pleasant, antecedent, emit, elicit, negative reinforcement, negative punishment, operant behavior, target behavior, and discriminative stimulus.

In my article titled "The Mysterious 'V' in my Hotel Bathroom" is about the history of folding toilet paper in hotel bathrooms, what it's significance is, and why hotels continue to emit this odd phenomenon around the world.

1) The target behavior of folding toilet paper is to insure to the guests staying at the hotel that their bathroom had been cleaned and no one had used it since.
2)The consequence is that people will feel clean and comfortable in their room.
3)The consequence will increase the likely hood that someone will stay there again or continue to at least use the restrooms there during their stay.
4)The addition of the folded toilet paper in the bathroom is positive reinforcement that the hotel elicits to improve the stay of their guests.
5) The antecedent is a dirty bathroom

A=Dirty bathroom
B=Folding toilet paper
C=Having a clean bathroom

The first part of this article has a lot of positive reinforcement making it an establishing operant.

In the same article, they begin to talk about a 70 year old car parts recycler from Japan that invented a mechanism that automatically folds the toilet paper after each person gets done using the bathroom.

1) The target behavior is eliminating unneeded man power in hotels to boost net revenue.
2)The consequence is making more money, but at the cost of leaving guests in your establishment uneasy as to if their bathroom was really cleaned well or not.
3)Having the automatic paper roller in your hotel will likely decrease the frequency as to which some guests will occupy your hotel.
4)The addition of the machine in the restrooms is positive punishment. Since there are no longer any hotel maids taking their time to fold the toilet paper for you one could assume that there are no hotel maids cleaning your bathroom. Which would make guests not want to use the bathrooms in their hotel rooms any longer.
5)The antecedent is the spending to much money on hotel maids folding toilet paper.

A=Spending to much money on hotel maids
B=Installing a machine to fold toilet paper automatically
C=Guests being uncomfortable in their rooms

This portion of the article involves extinction in the sense that there is no longer any one person that is folding your toilet paper anymore, and because of it people could assume that there was no one person that even cleaned their room before they got there for their stay.

The blog I chose is titled "Nato-led forces killed BBC reporter in Afghanistan". This article is about how a soldier accidentally killed a BBC reporter by the name of Ahmed Omed when he mistook him for an insurgent. This man's response of killing the reporter brought about many controversies and also brought into light many desirable additions that may help protect these men and women.

1) The first target behavior here is the accidental shooting of the reporter Ahmed Omed, who was mistaken for an insurgent. 2) The consequence of this behavior is a clarification of the aversive dangers reporters are subject to when they put their lives on the line to report news all over the globe. Higher protection is also looked at a lot heavier after this incident. 3) This consequence will decrease the target behavior because there will more or an awareness of these kinds of incidents and there will also be more protection for these reporters. 4) The consequence involves the addition of knowledge of the problem along with more protection for these journalists. 5) The antecedent is the journalists covering news all over the world.
A= Journalists covering news all over the world
B= A journalist is shot because he is mistaken for an insurgent
C= More of an awareness of the dangers journalists put themselves in when they report across the world along with more protection for them
This is an example of positive punishment because hopefully the increased knowledge of the dangers and the increased protection will help keep this from occurring again or as often.

1) The second target behavior that was elicited by the anger in this country is suicide bombings around the Tarin Kowt's market emitted by the Taliban. 2) The consequence of this was heavy fighting in this area afterward involving machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles. 3) The consequence will probably just increase the behavior because this kind of violence will just anger more people and cause them to continue the cycle of violence. 4) This consequence involves the addition of fighting with very dangerous weapons, along with the addition of many casualties. 5) The antecedent is built up anger in a country full of animosity.
A= Built up anger in a country full of animosity.
B= Suicide bombings around the Tarin Kowt's market.
C= Deadly fighting around this area with many destructive weapons.
This is an example of negative punishment because the consequence is not going to put an end to or decrease even the behavior that is occurring there.

The first piece that I read was about a cop from colorado who retired after driving with a fellow officer to a fallen officers funeral drinking and driving, littering, and reckless driving. 1. The target behavior was the cop behaving unlawfully while driving a squad care. 2. The consequence was the officer being fined and retiring. 3. I believe that the consequence will decrease the behavior as he is forced to retire and will no longer be able to commit such an act again.4. This article involves the addition of a fine to the officer and removal of his job. 5. The antecedent would be driving the squad car to a funeral.
A= driving squad car B= driving recklessly and drinking alcohol C= ticket and retirement
I believe this is an example of negative punishment as the cop emitted a wrongful behavior was set to retire losing his job and pay a ticket.

The second article I read was about a new study that explained that more people are happier when the richer people in a country get taxed more. 1. The target behavior was richer people are taxed. 2. The consequence are more people are happy. 3. I think the consequence will increase the behavior of taxing rich people as it gives the general population of happiness. 4. This article involves the addition of happiness to people in many countries because of the increase of taxes to rich people. 5. The antecedent is the study that researchers are doing.
A= the study B= rich being taxed more C= general public happier
I believe this is an example of positive punishment as the general public gets happier about the decrease of money of rich people. The tax elicited the study in the beginning which resulted with the emitting the happiness behavior. Although the behavior was aversive for the rich people it was positive as a consequence in the end.

The first article I did was called Playing on the Edge: The Psychology of a Goalkeeper. This article is about how goalies have a psychological connection with the game of soccer and how you have to be crazy to get a ball kicked at you at incredible speeds just to keep it out of the net.
1)The behavior is blocking a soccer ball.
2)The consequence of the behavior would be the crowd cheering.
3)This consequence will increase the frequency of the target behavior.
4)This consequence involves the removing of the ball from the scoring area and relieving pressure off of the goalie.
5)The antecedent is the soccer match.
A=The soccer match.
B=Blocking a goal.
C=The crowd cheering.
This would be an example of negative reinforcement. It involves the ball coming at them is eliciting the behavior of blocking the ball, this in turn emits the behavior of blocking the ball.

2) The consequence of the behavior is winning the US Open.
3) The consequence will increase the frequency of the behavior of winning.
4) The consequence involves the addition of the title of US Open champion.
5) The antecedent is being at the US Open finals.
A= Being at the US Open finals.
B= Winning the tennis match.
C= Winning the US Open.
This is an example of positive reinforcement because its adding something and increasing the frequency.

This article was written in July of 2006 and is about modern day pirates and how they still exist today. Within the past week (of this article) 6 pirate attacks had been reported and they are getting more violent. The target behavior here is stealing in a violent way and the consequence is being arrested, going to jail/prison, paying fines, or maybe even death during the attacks. The consequence should decrease the frequency of the behavior but it obviously doesn’t because they haven’t been caught yet and they obviously know the risks/consequences of their actions. I would say that the consequence involves adding something and taking away something; if they do time then you are taking away privileges in their life but if they are being fined then u are adding a financial burden to their life. The antecedent here is obviously money; the want for money is causing these pirates to rob/attack people so they can gain more money/valuables. This is an example of negative punishment which if given time will result in extinction (of privileges).

A= Want for Money
B= Stealing
C= Punishment from authorities

Another target behavior in this article would survival of the people being attacked, and the consequence for this is staying alive and safe. The consequence of staying alive and safe will increase the likely hood of the behavior. I would say that the consequence involves the removal of something and that would be fear. You have to remove your fear for a period of time to survive. The antecedent to this behavior is the attack from pirates. There could also be a Discrimitive stimulus which would be less people going out into the ocean or less people wanting to be on cruise trips for fear they will be attacked. This is of positive reinforcement, if u fight to survive you will stay alive.

A= Pirates Attacking
B= Fighting to stay alive (survival)
C= Staying alive/being safe

The news article that I chose is discussing conservative view points towards the battle on public funding for birth control. This subject has been very controversial in the past and only seems to raise more eyebrows as our country grows greater and greater in debt. One of the main conclusions about publicly funded birth control is that it is link to abortions. This connection was made when more people started realizing Planned Parenthood provided birth control along with abortions. However, this is changing.

1.) The target behavior being illustrated by the conservatives is to not publicly fund birth control. This will reinforce people to really think about the decisions they are making. If women have to pay full price for birth control, perhaps there would be more people abstaining from sex all together. Ultimately this would reduce unintended pregnancies, STI’s and so on.
2.) There could be numerous consequences to not publicly funding birth control. Such as more unintended pregnancies, children being raised in poverty, increased promiscuity. For this particular assignment, I will say the consequence to not publicly funding birth control is an increase in unintended pregnancies among teenage girls.
3.) The consequence to having a child from not being able to purchase birth control since it was not publicly funded, would probably decrease the frequency of the behavior. There would be a dramatic rise in the amount of teen moms in the United States and public health officials, government, etc. would step in eventually and aid the situation.
4.) The consequence of more teenage girls having babies would increase the amount of money government would be funding towards birth control costs.
5.) The antecedent of this situation would be being a teenage girl in the United States that is sexually active.

A = Being a sexually active teen in the United States
B = Not being able to afford birth control
C = More unintended pregnancies

The act of taking away publicly funded birth control would be considered negative punishment. The teenage girls would be deprived of the pills that once elicited a safer circumstance for the sexual behaviors they were emitting.

1.) The target behavior is to decrease the total number of sexual partners among teenage girls. This would be considered positive punishment because birth control is being taken away and the number of sexual partners will decrease resulting in fewer health risks.
2.) The consequence is lessening the total number of sexual partners among teenage girls in the United States.
3.) The consequence to decreasing the total number of sexual partners among teenage girls, in this assignment, would increase the frequency of young girls abstaining from sex. Since they are not being promiscuous, they will retain a higher self esteem, engage in other activities and focus on friends more.
4.) The consequence is removing birth control from being publicly funded and as a result, more girls will abstain from sex.
5.) The antecedent is being a teenage girl in the United States that is currently taking birth control.

A = Being a teenage girl in the United States that currently takes birth control, but no longer can afford it
B = Increasing sexual health knowledge
C = Less sexual partners among teenage girls in the U.S.

The act of increasing knowledge among teenage girls would be positive reinforcement. The girls would be satiated with the sexual behaviors they are eliciting from the knowledge they have acquired.

Since the Ten Year anniversary of September 11th is closely approaching, I thought it would only be appropriate to find an article about such. In this particular article, it discusses how all of us can volunteer nation-wide.

1.) The creators of this non-profit organization, Jay Winuk and David Paine, have set out to target a particular behavior: for people to volunteer and donate locally in remembrance of 9/11. 2.) Many consequences can result from this. Specifically, the objective is to unite the nation and bring the country together as a whole. However, many others can have a range of different consequences. For example, it might make some people feel better about themselves. Also, the charities and establishments receiving the donations have consequences as well! 3.) I believe this will increase the behavior of volunteerism because when you feel good about something, you're more likely to repeat the behavior. Cuz... who doesn't like feeling good and being a wholesome part of society! 4.) In this particular instance, I think it is the addition of everyone's time and effort for volunteering. 5.) Finally, the antecedent is the the actual events of September 11th, 2001.

A.) September 11th, 2001
B.) Volunteering in your community
C.) Uniting the Nation, feeling better about yourself

This would be an example of positive reinforcement because people are adding their time and effort to this particular event, and it will be very reinforcing.
Also, this article shows an establishing operation. Due to the fact that it is the tenth anniversary of September 11th, people are much more motivated to participate locally in their charities and volunteer establishments. Even though most of these things have been available to everyone for years, now that 9/11 is soon approaching, their efforts feel more reinforced, I believe.

In an article from vancouversun.com, I read about a woman who had accidently brought brownies to work that had traces of marijuana in them. The first behavior I would like to speak about is the reason why the police came because of a possible poisoning. Three employees of this business had found these brownies in the refrigerator and ate one. All three of these employees were hospitalized. So this is why the police came. I would consider the ABCs of this target behavior as follows:
A=seeing brownies in the fridge at work
B=eating said brownies
C=being hospitalized.
I would consider this positive punishment because the brownies added sickness to these employees.
Now the next part of the article is probably the most amusing part for me (besides the name of the article itself). The woman’s son told the police that he had baked the brownies, froze them, and forgot they were in there. Though were no charges of possession, he is expected to perform community work for what he has done. I would lay out the ABCs like this:
A=Mom gets in trouble for the brownies
B=Son comes clean about baking the brownies
C=Son will now have to do community service
This too would be considered positive punishment because he now will be forced to do additional things with his time.
Anyways, I thought this was an extremely amusing article. I hope you all do to.

The target behavior that is in the article I chose is pretty simple. Dont have an illegal drug cartel in Mexico. The Mexican drug cartel had their communication system disrupted by special ops because they were using it to coordinate transporting drugs, kidnapping and extortion throughout the area. The consequence of that behavior is getting your equipment seized. For now, getting their equipment seized will definitely decrease the frequency of them emitting criminal behaviors because theyve lost equipment. The consequence involves the removing of their communication systems. The antecedent is Mexico.
A - Mexico
B - Drugs, kidnapping, extortion
C - Getting communications disrupted
To me this is an example of negative punishment because the feds want to decrease the frequency of a behavior and in doing so they removed something. It may involve extinction because after the communication is disrupted, they may look for more ways to be criminals... or maybe they'll clean up their act.

The second article I found is about a woman who was in a library preparing for a job interview and her young child was playing with flash cards and was laughing loudly. She was asked to leave the library for her childs loud play and she apparently lost her temper and began yelling and hollering obscenities. Basically making a big scene. The target behavior (there could be more than one for this article) that I'm talking about is the lady leaving the library in a normal non scene making manner. The consequence to her behavior is that she was arrested across the street. The consequence aim is to decrease the frequency of the lady making a big scene in public. The consequence involves removing the womans freedom temporarily. The antecedent is a library being asked to leave
A - library being asked to leave
B - making a scene, being loud and vulgar
C - arrest
This is an example of negative punishment. The establishing operation is getting kicked out of a library for a childs behavior. This "sets the stage" for a mother to get very angry because she was trying to do accomplish something in the library.

The article I chose to read was about a young woman named Erin Heaney who is the executive director of the Clean Air Coalition of Western New York. The Clean Air Coalition emits protecting the rights for clean air.
1) The target behavior is the company emitting violations of federal laws
2) The consequence of violating those laws is the companies environmental control manager facing aversive charges.
3) The consequence of facing aversive charges will decrease the frequency of the company violating federal laws.
4) The consequence of facing charges involves the removal of the person’s freedom.
5) The antecedent is the protest at the company’s gates.

A: Protest at company gates
B: violating federal laws
C: companies environmental control manager faces charges

I think this is an example of negative punishment because it is decreasing the frequency that the company will violate federal laws again by pressing charges on the company.

1) The target behavior is Heaney accepting the position and fighting for social justice.
2) The consequence of Heaney accepting the position and fighting for social justice is feeling rewarded and happy with her career.
3) The consequence of feeling rewarded and happy with her career will increase the frequency of Heaney accepting the position of fighting social justice.
4) The consequence of feeling rewarded and happy with her career involves the addition of happiness to her life.
5) The antecedent is Heaney being offered the Clean Air Coalition position.

A: Heaney being offered the Clean Air Coalition position
B: accepting position and fighting for social justice
C: feeling rewarded and happy with her career

I think this is an example of positive reinforcement because it is increasing the frequency that Heaney will fight for social justice because she felt rewarded and happy.

The Nato-led Internacional Security, when responded to a militant attack in Afghanistan, killed accidentally a BBC reporter.

First Behavior:
1) The target behavior that illustrates the punished behavior is the moment when the BBC reporter was reaching for something on his person, trying to identify himself.
2) The consequence of the target behavior was the shot of the soldier.
3) The consequence will decrease the frequency of the behavior.
4) The consequence involves a removal, the dead of the BBC reporter.
5) The antecedent was the attempting to clear the building

A=Attempting to clear the building
B=BBC reporter trying to identify himself
C=BBC reporter is shot

This is an example of negative punishment, the operant behavior had a drastic consequence because of the elicited response of the solder caused by the reporter behavior.
Second Behavior:
1) The target behavior that illustrates the reinforcement behavior is the communication of the Taliban denied killing the reporter.
2) The consequence of the target behavior it is the announcement of the NATO mistake.
3) The consequence will increase the frequency of the behavior.
4) The consequence involves the addiction of the announcement and the NATO explanations.
5) The antecedent is the claim of the Taliban attack.

A= Claim of the Taliban attack
B= Deny killing the reporter
C= announcement of the NATO mistake

This is an example of negative reinforcement because the NATO`s announcement was elicited by the Taliban communication.

The article I chose to read pertains to the September 11th Anniversary. The article tells about how September 11th has affected a woman named Carie Lemack. Her mother was killed in the plane attacks, and she has gone through the grieving process in a very productive way. She has devoted the past 11 years of her life to making sure something like this never happens again. 1) Carie Lemack has founded two organizations, Families of September 11 and Global Survivors Network. This is the target behavior I would like to analyze. 2) The consequence of this behavior is being able to make a difference. 3) Being able to make a difference, especially on a topic that hits so close to home for Carie, will definitely increase the frequency of the behavior. 4) This consequence also involves the addition of something. By doing this behavior Carie is gaining a sense of self-worth and purpose. 5) The antecedent of the target behavior is having a love one die in the September 11th attacks.

A= Setpember 11th attacks
B= Founding two organizations
C= Making a difference

My first target behavior is an example of positive reinforcement. I would say that this is an example of establishing behavior. Not only did the September 11th attacks happen, but the fact that her mother was one of many to die in the attacks makes her want to do even more to prevent it from happening again.

1)The second target behavior I would like to talk about is this: Since the September Carie has become very aware of what could happen. An hour before giving a speech Carie had had an argument over the phone with her sister, which resulted in Carie hanging up on her. Since the argument Carie has not heard from her sister and her sister won’t return any calls, which makes Carie extremely nervous. To get to the point the target behavior of this scenario is hanging up on her sister. 2) The consequence of this behavior is becoming worried. 3) This consequence will decrease the number of times she hangs up on her sister. 4) This consequence involves the addition of something, which is worry. 5) The antecedent is getting into an argument with her sister.

A= Getting into an argument with her sister
B= Hanging up on her sister
C= Getting worried when she doesn’t hear from her sister

This target behavior is an example of positive punishment because her behavior is decreasing yet something is being added which is worry. This could be an example extinction because when she calls her sister she is usually rewarded with her picking up the phone. However, after she hangs up on her sister Carie is no longer receiving a response when she calls her sister. Like example one I think this can also be a form of establishing behavior for the same reasons. Carie said herself that she would not get so worried if she have gone through what she did during Sept. 11th.

This news story is about a man who was on a hunting trip with his buddies and ended up getting separated from them by chasing a squirrel. He had to survive on muddy water and worms for 5 days until he was eventually found by some people passing by. 1) The target behavior I am focusing on would be the man eating the worms for 5 days to survive. 2) The consequence of this is that he kept his energy in order to keep moving and find his way out. 3) This consequence will increase the frequency of the man’s behavior of eating the worms because it is motivating him to do so. 4) The consequence involves the addition of energy for the man by eating the worms. 5) The antecedent is the man being separated from his buddies while hunting.
A= Man being separated from friends while hunting
B= Man chooses to eat worms to survive
C= Man keeps his energy in order to be found
This is an example of positive reinforcement and involves deprivation since the man was deprived of his necessities when he got lost. Since the man emitted a behavior of eating worms, he probably elicited a feeling of sickness at first. The discriminate stimulus in this example would be the fact that the man got lost and really had no other option than to eat the worms to survive.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/hunter-bill-lawrence-lost-days-ate-worms-survive-14475452

1)The next behavior I am focusing on is the man chasing the squirrel. 2) The consequence of this is that he got separated and lost from his friends he was hunting with. 3) This consequence will decrease the frequency of the man running off to try and shoot animals without his friends. 4) The consequence involves the loss of something, and in this case it would be his hunting group. 5) The antecedent is the man being on a hunting trip with his friends.
A= Man is on a hunting trip with a group
B= Man chases a squirrel without the group
C= Man ends up getting separated from his friends
This is an example of negative punishment. Since the man emitted a behavior of chasing the squirrel alone, he became separated from his group and therefore was deprived of his necessities. His response to being lost was to eat worms to survive.

For my blog I found a video/article that tells of a man that attempted to rob a 7-Eleven while wearing a Gumby suit. Yes, you heard correctly, a Gumby suit! Whatever happened to a good old fashioned ski mask? Anyways, “Gumby” asked for money from the register and the clerk didn’t give him any because he laughed and thought it was a joke. “Gumby” then threatened the clerk with a gun, only to find that he couldn’t get the gun out of the pocket due to his oversized Gumby hands. In the process he dropped some change out of his pocket (who keeps change in a Gumby suit anyways?) and got so frustrated that he left the store without robbing it.
1) The target behavior would be the guy putting on a Gumby suit to rob a gas station
2) The consequence of this behavior would be the clerk laughing at him and refusing to give him money.
3) The consequence then decreases the likelihood of this happening again due to shame and embarrassment.
4) The consequence involves the addition of laughter I would suppose.
5) The antecedent would be “Gumby” putting on the Gumby suit to rob the bank
A= Gumby putting on the Gumby suit
B= Wearing a Gumby suit to a gas station robbery
C= Gumby getting laughed at and not getting any money
This behavior would be an example of positive punishment because after Gumby emits the behavior of asking the clerk for money while wearing such a ridiculous outfit, the clerk elicits laughter. This makes Gumby feel embarrassed and stupid, thus creating an aversive experience for Gumby. The aversive experience of being laughed at will most likely decrease this behavior because he won’t want to go through the embarrassment again.
Part 2:
1) The target behavior would “Gumby” not being able to get the gun out due to his large Gumby hands.
2) The consequence of this behavior is that he leaves without the money
3) The consequence then decreases the likelihood that he’ll rob a gas station in a Gumby suit ever again, or possibly any kind of character suit ever again
4) The consequence involves the inability to remove the gun, and not getting the money.
5) The antecedent would be the guy wearing a Gumby suit for a gas station robbery.
A= The guy wears a Gumby suit to the gas station
B= “Gumby” then tries to get the gun out of his pocket, but cannot due to his Gumby suit
C= “Gumby” does not get the money because he can’t get the gun out of his pocket
This behavior would be an example of negative punishment. The guy emits the behavior of wearing the Gumby suit; the Gumby suit elicits the behavior of not being able to allow him to get the gun out. This is negative punishment because it decreases the likelihood of him wearing a Gumby suit to rob a gas station because he didn’t get the pleasant stimulus of money.

The article I chose described the signing of a new law in Peru. The new law states that any new company must consult indigenous people about development on their land. The situation was brought to attention when 30 people were killed while protesting a new project which would destroy their homes.
1) The target behavior I will be analyzing is the approval of the law by the president.
2) The consequence of this law is decreasing tension and fighting between developers and indigenous people.
3) The consequence will increase the target behavior because the president is being reinforced by the desirable outcome.
4) The consequence involves the removal of something; tension. To the indigenous people this is the addition of security but for the president the consequence is the removal of a hostile environment.
5) The antecedent in this situation is the writing up of the law. The law was written up which elicited the president to emit an approving behavior.
A=Law is written up
B=President approves
C=The population gets along better
This is an example of negative reinforcement. The president added this new law to reduce fighting in his country. The establishing operation here is the deaths of the people who were trying to protect their land. This law would have been desirable without these deaths, but without these deaths the consequence of adding this law has become more reinforcing.

The second article I chose to study is about the “return-trip effect.” It is something we have all felt and has several different possible reasoning behind it. When going on trips, the return home always seems to take a shorter amount of time.
1) The target behavior I am interested in is the act of returning home.
2) The consequence of making a return trip home, is that is feels shorter than the drive to your original destination.
3) The consequence of this behavior will increase the act of returning home. In most people’s mind, a short traveling time is a desirable consequence. If the trip home seemed to take much longer than the trip to where you are going, people may not make as many trips (This reasoning is really far stretched, I know).
4) This consequence involves the removal of time, maybe not literally but psychologically.
5) The antecedent in the trip being over with.
This is an example of negative reinforcement. The trip being over elicits a need to come home. The travelers then emit of coming home behavior. The traveling distance seems shorter to them which reinforces them to come home the next trip they are on. If traveling a far distance, the travelers are satiated with driving/flying/walking/etc.. Once this occurs, the product of a short trip makes these travelers more pleased with the consequence of traveling home. The satiation becomes an establishing operation.

John Edwards was punished for using around $1 million to hide the fact that he had a pregnant mistress. He is being charged with helping to falsify campaign finance reports to cover up the payments. This is positive punishment because this aversive effect is being added by the court system. This consequence will definitely decrease the frequency of the behavior because he will not want to be charged with this again. This involves the addition of the charges onto his record. The antecedent would be getting someone pregnant while he was married to someone else.
A=Getting someone pregnant
B=Embezzling around $1 million
C=Being charged with a crime
It would be positive punishment because it is adding a criminal charge to his record. This is definitely an aversive outcome for him.
The case is being delayed for three months as of September 8, 2011. The consequence of this delay is it will give the defense sufficient time to prepare their case. It may increase the defense’s procrastination because they will think they will continue to get delays. The consequence involves the addition of time to prepare for the defense team. The antecedent is the defense motioning for a “reasonable” delay.
A= defense motioning for a “reasonable” delay
B=case is delayed for three months
C= addition of time to prepare for the defense team
This is positive reinforcement because the time was given to them after they motioned for it. The defense was reinforced after eliciting a motioning behavior. This would be a pleasurable outcome for the defense.

My first article is basically about how the average American believes that since 9/11 our security strategies have increased and therefore making this a safer country. From the viewpoint of the authors of this article, the exact opposite has happened. They say that security has not increased because it is inefficient and costly.

In this article, (1) the target behavior is increased security measures, (2) which is the reinforced behavior. (3)The consequences of this behavior are the feeling of safety within Americans. In this case according to the authors in the article, the target behavior is specifically safer security measures, but this is not happening. Since this target behavior hypothetically is not working, the consequence will be panic or distrust from the American people. (4) In this case, this will decrease traveling due to low security. This consequence is the removal of travelers, which leads to a loss in money. (5) Finally, the antecedent is terrorist threats/attacks.

A= terrorist threats/attacks
B= Security at airports remains the same as before the threats/attacks
C= Public doesn’t trust security at airports and therefore stops traveling, then the airport loses money
This is an example of negative reinforcement. By slacking on security measures, the people are going to "take themselves" away from airports causing income loss.
My second article talks about how a small bar from Cedar Rapids, IA was shut down and was not renewed their liquor license due to possible IRS tax problems. (1) The target behavior in this article is noting that an establishment needs to pay their taxes in order to stay open. (2) In this case the behavior was not accomplished, and the consequence of not paying the taxes is that the bar will be shut down. (3) This consequence will increase the frequency of the behavior. It will let this bar and any other bars know that if you do not pay your taxes you will get into trouble. (4) The consequences involves the removal of a liquor license, along with shutting the establishment down. (5) The antecedent is being in business as a bar.
A=Being in business as a bar
B=Not paying taxes
C=Losing liquor license
This is negative punishment because the IRS is decreasing the operant behavior of the bar not paying their taxes by taking away their liquor license.

My article was about how the U.S Justice department is criticizing the Puerto Rican police for engaging in unethical behavior. Specifically, the U.S launched an investigation because a policeman shot an unarmed suspect. The target behavior is the Puerto Rican policeman shooting an unarmed suspect. The consequence of this behavior is the justice department launching an investigation. It will decrease the frequency of the corruption (specifically shooting unarmed suspects). In involves an addition of an investigation. The antecedent is the presence of drug cartels in Puerto Rico.

A= Drug cartels in Puerto Rico
B= Policeman shot an unarmed suspect
C=The justice department launched an investigation
It is positive punishment because it involves the addition of an investigation to stop the frequency of unarmed suspects being shot.

The target behavior is the PRPD’s failure to investigate sex crimes. The consequence of this behavior is that the Puerto Rican women no longer trust the PRPD. The consequence will decrease the frequency of the failure of the PRPD to investigate sex crimes because they don’t want the women to not trust them. The consequence involves the loss of trust in the PRPD. The antecedent is a corrupt PRPD.
A= A corrupt PRPD
B= Failure to investigate sex crimes.
C=Lack of trust in the PRPD by women
This is an example of negative punishment because it involves the removal of trust. One could possibly say that the women are engaging in extinction because currently they aren’t receiving reinforcement (security) that they used to, so they have lost faith in the PRPD.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-14848336

For my article, I found an interesting opinion piece written by a Muslim American about the difficulties of air travel, especially for those of Muslim decent here in the United States. One section described how Muslim Americans will go to great lengths to avoid travel by airplane. To me, that sentence said "DING DING DING! ABC'S!" So here is my first ABC from the article.
1) The target behavior is the behavior of boarding a plane.
2) The consequence is harassment by airport security.
3) The harassment will decrease the frequency of flying at United States airports.
4)Though it could go either way (the addition of harassment or the subtraction of rights), I think the article presents it more as the addition of harassment.
5) I think the antecedent is being in a United States airport.
A = Being in a United States airport
B = Boarding a plane
C = Harassment from airport security
This is an example of positive punishment because the addition of harassment from airport security forces Muslim Americans to avoid flying (boarding planes) in the United States as much as possible.
This example does include extinction, because the writer tells of how he is reinforced when using airports in other countries, and I would guess that before September 11, 2001, Muslim Americans were even reinforced when flying in American airports. Now however, they are not reinforced and it causes them immense frustration.
I also think being of Muslim descent is a discriminative stimuli for the harassment to occur. As with all other people who use the airport, airport security has the option to "randomly" search a Muslim American when checking luggage or to leave them alone. However, I think being Muslim makes it more likely for them to be harassed then for them to be left alone.

In the same article, the author describes behaviors that have gotten Muslims kicked off of planes.
1) The target behavior is wearing a t-shirt with Arabic script.
2) The consequence is being kicked off the plane.
3) The consequence will decrease the behavior of wearing an Arabic script t-shirt.
4) I would say this would include the subraction of the right to ride the plane as well as a loss of freedom and a loss of money.
5) The antecedent is being on an American based plane.
A = Being on an American based plane
B = Wearing an Arabic script t-shirt
C = Being kicked off the plane
This is an example of negative punishment because the subtraction of rights and ability to ride the plane will decrease the behavior of wearing an Arabic script shirt.
I think this example still includes extinction and the discriminative stimuli of being of Muslim descent. Extinction exists because the travelers were reinforced (or at least met with indifference) when wearing Arabic t-shirts on airplanes from other countries or in the United States before September 11, 2001.
Being of Muslim descent is a discriminative stimuli because it is the signal for airplane staff to treat the passenger differently than other passengers.

Writers Reflect On Childhood Torment In 'Dear Bully'

The article is about a woman who was bullied as a child and grew up to write a book about bullies, being bullied, suicide, and preventing bullying. She talked about how bullying has lead to suicide of a 15-year-old girl in Massachusetts named Phoebe Prince this last year in 2010. The article goes on to talk about how serious bullying is, how much it effects individuals (both the bullied and bullies), and the book that was written and how it will hopefully reach out to individuals who are bullied.

Example 1:

1. The target behavior is the idea of reaching out to and helping individuals who are bullied.
It is positive reinforcement from the perspective that the addition of confidence and the further addition of reaching out to the bullied individuals is reinforced as the number of bully related suicides and suicide attempts decreases.
2. The consequence of the behavior of reaching out to individuals who are bullied is that the individuals have hope and confidence and don’t feel that there is no escape from the ridicule-thus, there are fewer suicides and suicide attempts.
3. The consequence will decrease the number of suicides and the hopeless feelings of individuals who are bullied.
4. The consequence involves the addition of confidence to bullied individuals.
5. The antecedent in this particular case is the book that was written which reached out to bullied individuals and decrease suicide rates and suicide attempts.

A= Wrote a book
B= Reached out to individuals who are bullied
C=Bullied individuals have more self-confidence and faith-suicides decrease.

The example shows how the EMITTING of an outreach program such as the ELICITING of a book can EMIT a RESPONSE that displays POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT which increases confidence in individuals through focus on the TARGET BEHAVIOR. The ADDITION of confidence and comfort for bullied ORGANISMS is REINFORCED by the desired RESPONSE is that suicide attempts decrease.

Example 2:

1. The target behavior is the committing of/attempting suicide. This is difficult to state if it is punishment or reinforcement-I’m going to present this with the argument from the perspective of punishment. I believe it is punishment, specifically negative punishment because it takes away the life of someone who’s valuable. Thus, society, families, and the person who was bullying are all punished as a part of them is taken away (it’s a stretch because it’s psychological which is always difficult to define). I believe that the bully themselves is also positively punished as they receive a guilt that will most likely remain with them throughout life. I believe that it is the guilt specifically and the realization of how serious the act of bullying is that is the punisher. The punisher is and added emotion, therefore it is positive punishment because it decreases bullying.
2. Extreme bullying has, in some cases, as mentioned in the article, lead to suicide and the consequence or the effect that comes after the traumatic act of suicide a feeling of guilt and remorse in the bully-those feeling will decrease bullying.
3. The consequence will decrease the frequency of bullying as people are able to see what bullying can lead to and how horrible it is based on the action.
4. This consequence involves the removal of a human life which causes guilt and enlightens bullies of the severity of their actions. Thus, the consequence is a decrease bullying.
5. The antecedent was being bullied

A= Got Bullied
B= Committed Suicide
C=Bullies feel guilt and remorse (Bullying Decreases)

The example is POSITIVE PUNISHMENT as the EMITTING of bullying ELICITS feelings of emotional and even physical pain on an ORGANISM(1) as another ORGANISM(2) MANIPULATES the emotions of the ORGANISM(1). The OPERANT BEHAVIOR of both ORGANISMS draws attention to the TARGET BEHAVIOR which is suicide. The RESPONSE of ORGANISM(1) may be severe enough to EMIT suicide or a suicide attempt. The suicide is an AVERSIVE STIMILUS that will have the CONSEQUENCE of decreasing the rate of bully provoked suicides and lead to the POSITIVE PUNISHMENT that is ELICITING pain and guilt on ORGANISM(2) for the actions he/she/it EMITTED.

I chose an article from NPR’s music section on Adele’s chart topping hit ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and how even though it was released in November of 2010, it did not reach its peak until summer of 2011. The article also focuses on another behavior, the target behavior of this article; taking summer chart toppers such as ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and remixing them into electronica and dubstep dance hits.
The target behavior is taking summer chart toppers and remixing them into electronica dance hits. The consequence of these DJs emitting this remixing behavior is that the songs become even bigger hits, if possible, and allows them to reach new markets and audiences. It will most likely increase the frequency of this remixing behavior because the song is establishing operation by already being a chart topper and now is being exposed to a whole new audience where this action is being greatly received. This consequence involves the addition of a new market and audience as well as obviously a new sound. The Antecedent is this case is the song becoming a chart topper and establishing operation.
A=Song becoming chart topper on its own merits
B=Popular summer hits being remixed into electronica and dubstep hits
C=Song becomes even bigger and reaches new markets and audiences.
This is an example of positive reinforcement because you are taking something that is pleasurable and adding a new spin on the sound letting more people become acquainted with the song. It definitely deals with establishing operation because most of the songs remixed have already topped the charts. It also deals with extinction in the fact that the song will eventually reach satiation and lose momentum in popularity.
Another behavior in the article is that of people emit a behavior of listening, buying, and downloading songs like Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and how they gradually gain popularity and become chart toppers. The song elicits a pleasurable sound to many people. The reinforcement here is more and more people, usually peer groups, doing the same. The consequence here is the song gradually gains momentum in popularity among peer groups and on radio and video plays. The song eventually reaches its peak which is usually reaching number one on the charts. The consequence will increase the frequency of the behavior and then decrease the frequency of the behavior. First it will increase because the song will become popular and many people will really like it and listen to it often. It will be followed up by a decrease because as the song reaches satiation, the popularity will eventually go down. The consequence involves addition in the amount of people it will reach as it reaches peak popularity. It may also involve subtraction of people as it does reach satiation more and more people will tire of the song.
A=An artist, such as here with Adele, releases a track or song
B=People getting on the song’s bandwagon
C=The song gains huge popularity, more and more people are introduced to the song and it becomes a chart topper
This is an example of positive reinforcement because again you are taking something that is pleasurable and providing more opportunities to experience the song. I believe it can also be seen as positive punishment because again as the song reaches satiation, experiencing the song more frequently can be found very aversive. Finally it deals with extinction because it will eventually reach satiation and lose popularity, making way for the next big hit.

IN the article I chose to read covered a murder at the Yale University and the lawsuit the family had chosen to file against the university for not protecting its female students better. The target behavior is the murder of the female student that illustrates the punished behavior. The consequence of the behavior is having a lawsuit filed against them. The consequence will hopefully cause the university to re-examine its policies to better protect and prevent incidents like the previous mentioned from happening. The consequence involves the addition of new safety measures of some sort for the university. The antecedent for the situation is the murder of the girl on the college campus.

A= poor security precautions on campus
B= murder of a female student
C= having a lawsuit filed against them

The lawsuit is an example of positive punishment, something is being added in to punish the university for its mistake.

The second behavior in the article is the murder itself. The target behavior for the man was murdering the young girl and it was punished behavior. The consequence of the behavior had to go to prison. The punishment should decrease the behavior, as jail is a rehabilitation program. The consequence involves the removal of everyday pleasures. The antecedent for the situation is that the man worked with the young girl in a lab one night.

A=being in a lab with a girl
B=murdering the female student
C=going to prison for 44years

Going to prison I believe could be seen as a positive or negative punishment. It is a positive punishment in the sense it is adding prison into the man’s life. A negative punishment in the sense that he is losing all privileges.

I chose a news article that I saw today and was honestly frightened by. Since the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is coming up, there has been much talk about if this will elicit subsequent attacks on the U.S. It is something we have all expected frankly. This article discusses how there has been at least 3 people who are planning to launch an attack against Washington D.C. or New York around the anniversary of 9/11. They have supposedly come to the U.S. from Afghanistan, stopping in possibly Iran. The worst part is that one is believed to be a U.S. citizen. Believed to be aligned with this, two rental trucks have been stolen and are being sought nationwide. Officials say it seems like the plot is very specific and has been worked for a while. One official told ABC that the threat is credible and multiple sources say bulletins are being sent to law enforcement tonight. The White House has said that the President has been briefed and updated continuously. The U.S. has already significantly enhanced security in advance of the anniversary to protect our country from possible attacks. The President has directed counterterrorism to redouble its efforts to this credible but unconfirmed information.

1. For the first behavior, the target behavior is the U.S. enhancing their security in advance of the anniversary of 9/11.
2. The consequence of emitting this is (hopefully) fear and deterrence in the possible terrorists.
3. It is the hope and goal of the U.S. to show possible terrorists that they cannot attack us again, because we are ready and we are protected. Hopefully making them afraid that we will be ready will decrease the chances that an attack will be carried out.
4. The consequence involves the addition of fear and deterrence.
5. The antecedent is the anniversary of 9/11.

A= anniversary of 9/11
B= increasing security in the U.S.
C= fear and deterrence in possible terrorists

This is an example of positive punishment. Hopefully the U.S. enhancing security in light of the anniversary of 9/11 will elicit the possible terrorists to emit fear and deterrent behavior, therefore decreasing the likelihood that we will be attacked again. This could hopefully result in extinction of terrorists emitting attacks on us because they will not be reinforced with the enjoyment of hurting us. In a different view, our pain and suffering response to the first attack was a reinforcer for the terrorists, thus they were reinforced to emit another attack. In order to elicit extinction, we must show them that they cannot hurt us, therefore they are not reinforced.

1. For the second behavior, the target behavior is seeking out the two rental trucks as part of this plan.
2. The consequence of emitting this is distraction from REAL attacks.
3. I think this consequence will elicit a decrease in attaching and looking into SIDE information to something so important and dangerous. These trucks are not even KNOWN to be part of the terrorists’ possible plan; therefore, emitting attention to a distraction may result in blindsided attacks. These will hurt us; therefore, we may decrease searching in the wrong direction, especially when the information is unconfirmed.
4. The consequence involves the removal of attention to actual threats.
5. The antecedent is suspected terrorist activity.

A= Suspected terrorist activity
B= Searching for stolen rental trucks
C= Distracted attention from REAL attacks

This is an example of negative punishment. The terrorists deprived us of severe/real threats for many years. This establishing operation elicited us to emit greater belief in their possible threat. The consequence of emitting credence to a possible false lead may be aversive if they truly are trying to distract us from their goal. Sadly enough, a consequence of being distracted may result in reinforcement for terrorists that they CAN launch these attacks on us. It is easy to see how these types of situations can be chains of punishment and reinforcement. The discriminating stimulus here is possible threats. It elicits us to emit active, protective responses, because we know if we do not, there is a high likelihood that we will be brought down. Hopefully our responses work and the anniversary of 9/11 remains silent and safe.

10-year-old boy refuses to say pledge allegiance until the U.S. really has “liberty and justice for all”.
1.) The Boy decided to not stand up in class while the class would say the pledge of allegiance.
2.) The teacher gave the student “grief” for not choosing to stand-up and say the Pledge, and being removed from the classroom.
3.) The behavior did not decrease, although it was an aversive response, the boy continued to stand, or rather sit his ground until the U.S. has “liberty and justice for all”.
4.) The behavior involved the boy being removed from the classroom, and sent to the principals’ office.
5.) The antecedent is being in the classroom before the pledge is about to start.
This target behavior is considered, negative punishment.
A – Sitting in the classroom before the Pledge starts.
B – Choosing not to say the Pledge of Allegiance.
C – Boy is teased for not say pledge and sent to principal’s office.
The other behavior that I choose was,
1.)The sub-teacher was giving the boy a hard time for not standing up and saying the pledge.
2.) The Sub was in trouble for giving the student a hard time and not respecting his rights.
3.) the behavior did decrease for fear of losing her job.
4.) the behavior involved the Sub talking “rudely” to the boy and sending him to the principal’s office.
5.) the antecedent is being the Sub teacher for that classroom when the boy decided to not say the pledge.
This target behavior is considered, negative punishment.
A – Being in the classroom when the boy does not say the pledge with the class.
B – giving the boy grief about not saying the pledge and sending him to the principal’s office
C – the Sub get in trouble for not respecting the boy rights.
