This video clip displays an act of reinforcement on the general public. This is very interesting considering we live in a society that has an easy route for everything. In this case, instead of just having stairs, we have an escalator right next to the stairs. This is a big reason why our society is so obese. We have made everything easier on ourselves. By making the stairs a piano it turned into a positive reinforcer, because people thought it was fun, therefore climbing the stairs was more fun than riding the escalator. When considering the ABC's
A= Turning the stairs into a piano
B= People climbing the stairs more than the escalator
C= People choosing the stairs instead of the escalator
This really does show how people will change their behavior to hear something pleasurable! They used the escalator because it was quick and easy. But when you add something entertaining to plain stairs and have them make sounds it allows people to explore and enjoy going up the stairs! This is a really neat video!
I love it! Mostly because I love most anything musical! As an alternative to the ABC's working to promote the use of stairs instead of the escalator, I can also see another outcome that is not shown. The stairs making SOOO much noise, may not be pleasureable to all. Therefore, the noise may make the escalator more reienforcing for the person, and not change their behavior of being lazy but just increase it.
Good point that the music could be aversive. I never even thought of that. It would be so cool if this was real, though. I'd take the stairs every single day....unless I had a headache.
I love this video! It's neat to see that an escalator that is right next to the stair and how it shows how many people take it BEFORE the stair became a piano. Then after it was transformed it became more pleasureable for people to take the stairs! People were having fun with it by jumping on the different steps and creating music. It can relate to the ABCs by A-turning the stairs into the piano- B- people taking the stair C-hearing the music so they will take the stairs more, the are reinforced to take the stair because it not just "normal" stairs. Great Video.
I think this video is amazing and just shows you how reinforcements can change people's behaviors so much. Just by changing the reinforcement of taking the stairs into something that is fun can completely change millions of people's behaviors. This is related to the ABCs of behavior in the way that the antecedent was changed to increase the outcome of a behavior. These stairs remind me of another video I saw that was like this in a way, but it dealt with a trash can, that was meant to help increase people's behavior of throwing things away rather than littering. When people put trash in the trash can, it would sound like the trash was falling forever until it hit the bottom of the bin. It was quite interesting and increased people's behavior of throwing trash away quite a bit.
This is a classic example of the ABC's of behavior. They changed the public's behavior of taking the escalator by a, making the stairs a piano, b, resulting in them using the stairs, and c, changing their habits of lazily riding the escalator to walking up the stairs, probably on a regular basis. It's an example we've seen many times, where making the once aversive behavior a pleasurable one, subjects will change the way they look at it and change their behavior accordingly.
This is so sweet. The A would be the turning the stairs into a piano, the B would be walking on the stairs and the C would be the noise that comes from the stairs thus increasing the amount of times people use the stairs as opposed to the escalator. I personally think all stair cases need to be this way, or play some type of music (like drums). It would be awesome.
I can see why the people who reconstructed the stairs call it the fun theory. Now a days, people are constantly trying to make things easier on themselves, whether it's the simplest of things to the more extreme. We are becoming a rather lazy society, which can be seen in our growing rates of obesity.
No one really likes the stairs, but for the sake of exercise some will take them. However, making it fun is a whole new thing, as the clip showed. Once a aversive activity is made to be fun, it no longer holds the same aversive quality. More people emitted the behavior of taking the stairs just to see how the stairs sounded worked and actually had fun climbing the stairs. Perhaps if there were more stairs like these around more people would use them; I know I would.
The A= changing the stairs into a working piano
The B = more people using the stairs rather then the escalator
The C = there are more people choosing to use the stairs
I really enjoyed this video. I can't believe how lazy people are! I've noticed the same kind of behavior when there's an automatic door next to a regular push door. The video really displays the idea that reinforcement does work. The ABC's tie into this video because the antecedent is making the stairs more pleasurable by making them into a piano. The behavior is that more individuals use the stairs versus the escalator. The consequence is that there are more individuals choosing to use the stairs. I believe that adjustments like this could help with the obesity problem because it would teach people that taking the extra step could be fun.
I really want these in the WRC! Stair workouts would be so much better!
The antecedent here would be changing the stairs into fun stairs, in this case by making them into a piano. The behavior, then, is stair-climbing, which is reinforced by music, so the consequence is more people taking the stairs.
As to the comments about lazy people, I got the pleasure of witnessing a great example of laziness (stupidity??) at the mall near my home. The escalator in Scheels stopped working suddenly, and people just stood there, waiting for it to come back on. They did the whole look-around-at-everyone-else in confusion, visually searched the nearby area for employees, and some people actually waited on the escalator until it started working again. Lazy? Dumb? I dunno, but it was depressing to watch.
This video reminded me of something Dr. Hitlan showed us in Applied last semester while talking about persuasion. This one was making people throw away more trash. It's really amusing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbEKAwCoCKw
This is a really fun example on how to change people's behavior. Not only was it a more 'fun' options, but also almost everyone else was doing it. We conform to the norms of what other people do. Too bad we don't have these kind of stairs all over!
A would be turning the stairs into a piano
B would be the people taking the stairs rather than the escalator
C would be people choosing the stairs rather than the escalator
I think this is an awesome way for people to give up taking the easy way out of doing things. By making the stairs into a piano they made walking up them fun. So people take them instead of the escalator which in turn provides people with more exercise. This relates to the ABC's in the following way...
A- people turn normal stairs into a piano.
B- People take the stairs because there's something new on it.
C- People take the stairs over the escalator and people are getting more exercise.
Just imagine if we did this to all the stairs in the world. Maybe it would decrease the number of escalators and elevators needed in the world.
This would be way fun and I would definately take the stairs just to hear the piano! It is a great example of a pleasurable change in behavior. Most people were using the escalator rather than taking the stairs which required less work for their body. By taking the piano stairs they were positively reinforced because they got to hear pretty sounds when they were putting their body to work! Great idea!
This looks way fun! It definately applies to the ABCs of the behavior. A (antecedent) would be turning the stairs into a piano. B (behavior) would be the people taking the stairs to check it out and what it would do. And C (consequence) is the people taking the stairs more than the escalator. It brought in a fun element to change the behavior.
If all stairs were like these stairs, id be taking the stairs a lot more! With all the lazy people in the world if we just eliminated escalators everyone would be a lot healthier... A) turning the stairs into a piano, B)people walk on the stairs and enjoy the music they are hearing, C) people use the stairs and burn calories...resulting in a fitter America!

It turns taking the stairs into a type of pleasurable reinforcement. The antecedent(A) would be the stairs being a piano. The behavior(B) would be walking on stairs more because its a piano and consequence(c) would be becoming more active and healthier.
