Family Guy - Lois Mom Mum Mommy

How does this relate to what we are learning about behavior?

This video clip relates to conditioning. Stewie has been conditioned (by Lois) on how to get attention from her. If Lois never responded to Stewie, then he would have to figure out another way to get her attention. Since she finally gave in, next time Stewie wants Lois's attention he will probably do the same exact thing because he knows it will work, it just might take longer.

Funny! Not a good parenting idea! Random Interval Response is the most effective reinforcement technique. Stewie knows that his Mom will answer him sometime, he just doesn't know when. He just needs to keep it up long enough! This technique is a great way to keep someone doing something (hopefully used only for good)! A great way to reward, because you never know when the reward is going to be given.

I agree with the two other comments. This is not an effective parenting style. What lois is emitting is positive reinforcement. She should have tried to emit negative punishment. In which case she would have ignored Stewie. Ignoring him would have created negative punishment. She would have been taking away the normal interaction that they have, which in turn would have punished Stewie. The consequence would have been Stewie decreasing the behavior he is engaging in.
Current (w/ positive reinforcement)
A-Being bored
B- Calling his mom's name for no reason
C-Getting his mom's attention

W/ negative punishment
A-Being bored
B-Calling his mom's name for no reason
C-Giving up because there is no response

I agree with the comments above. Lois is responding based on random intervals therefore stewie has learned that eventually not matter how long he annoys his mother he will end up getting a response from her. This type of behavior is also present in siblings. Everyone has that one brother or sister that will do anything and everything to annoy one another. The only reason he/she continues to do those annoying behaviors is because eventually the brother or sister will create a response. We also see this type of behavior in casinos. People that get addicted to gambling know that if they spend enough time putting money into the slot of playing black jack they will eventually win.

I love this video! I've seen it before! But i do agree with other.Stewie is conditioned as to how to get his mothers attention. He has formed behaviors to get her attention. If one way does not work then he is going to find another way to get it rather if it is postive or negative.

The behavior from Stewie was a very good example of extinction bursts. Lois is trying to ignore Stewie because he has been annoying her and been so demanding all day so she tries to not respond to his cries for her hoping that extinction will occur to his behavior. Stewie starts to go through extinction bursts starts using variability by calling her by Mom, Mommie, Lois, Mum to get her attention. Lois finally gives in by screaming what, which she should have not done because extinction was happening and we can tell this because of stewies extinction bursts. So if Lois would have stuck it out more then she might have been able to extinguish the behavior.
