How do signs control our behavior? How can we explain some of these signs from a behavioral perspective? How do rules control our behaviors?

I thought this picture was funny, and also true at times. Here's a link to another funny picture from the same website: http://www.funny-games.biz/pictures/949-extra-parking-place.html
This picture is very funny, but of course if you are the one driving it isn't so funny. This picture reminds of last semester when they were doing all of that road work on University. That was such a pain! (Emily) I thought your link about the drunk drivers was pretty good and so true!
This picture is funny because you know that exact thought is occurring to every person that is driving past.
This picture has some truth to it. It is a funny photo because when your not the only one driving on the road then you have this notiion that everyoe else is making you late.
From a young age we are taught to obey traffic signs (and other public signs) and have been reinforced for doing so. For instance, if we are driving and come across a parking space that is handicapped only, and we obviously are not handicapped or have a handicapped sticker, then we don't park there-- consequently we are reinforced by NOT getting a parking ticket and a fine.
We are constantly reinforced on a day to day basis by obeying public signs, so much so that sometimes when there is a peculiar sign or it obviously doesn't make any logical sense, we tend to follow it anyway because that is what we have learned and been reinforced for, which can obviously lead to some adverse consequences from time to time.
